History of Father's Day

Sonora Dodd, of Washington, is credited with coming up with the idea of having a day to honor fathers, "father's day." The idea came on her while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Sonora's mother died giving birth to her sixth child leaving her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran, to raise six children on a farm in eastern Washington state. Sonora decided that there should be a day to honor fathers.
Fathers day has changed in the last several decades. Today, most fathers only share a long distance relationship with their children. Regrettably, this means that father's day has taken on little meaning to our generation. However, we should stop and take a moment to think about what the day means to our fathers.
I cannot visit my father. So, because of online shopping, I am sending him a surprise, fun gift, that will be a speccial joke between the two of us. My father has a peculiar sense of humor. So, I am going to send him something that will speak to his heart.
I spent some time looking for fathers day gifts and decided to send him a gift-basket full of assorted nuts. I think he'll 'get it.' Even if he doesn't - he'll have fun eating the nuts.
I find it hard to buy a unique father's day gift every year. I like getting a gourmet gift basket filled with chocolates, nuts, wines, cheeses and fruits. But, for my dad, I like the idea I can make a personalized gift basket that he will know - without a doubt - was made just for him.
