Heart "What About Love"

Led by sisters Ann And Nancy Wilson, the hard rock band Heart emerged from the Pacific Northwest in the early '70s and became one of the first female led groups to find widespread success in the rock world. During the '70s, Heart placed eight songs into the US Top 40, including rock radio staples like "Magic Man," "Barracuda," and "Dog & Butterfly." They were also enormously popular as a live draw.

The '80s, though, saw the band's popularity waning. Albums like 1982's Private Audition and 1983's Passionworks failed to make much of an impact, although the former did spawn a #1 album rock hit with "How Can I Refuse" and Ann Wilson duetted with Loverboy's Mike Reno on the Top Ten hit "Almost Paradise" in 1984. Few thought that a change of record labels in 1984 from Columbia to Capitol would change their fortunes. Expectations for Heart to recapture their previous level of success were minimal when they released their self-titled Capitol debut in 1985.

However, the album's first single, "What About Love," quickly picked up airplay. The dramatic ballad was slicker than any of Heart's previous material and offered Ann Wilson an opportunity to wring every bit of emotion out of her voice. By July, "What About Love" had crossed over from album rock to mainstream pop radio and become Heart's tenth US Top 40 hit and first since "This Man Is Mine" three years earlier.

Throughout the summer, "What About Love," aided by heavy airplay for its accompanying video on MTV, slowly climbed the chart. It took nearly two and a half months, but in mid-September, the song reached the Top Ten, the band's third such hit, when it peaked at #10 for a single week. Nonetheless, Heart had re-established themselves at radio and Heart would become the group's biggest album, yet, with more hits to come.
