Hair dye- my great vice.

My name is IntricateGirl, and I am a hairdye addict. No, seriously. My mom began dyeing hers when I was 12, and I was allowed to do mine at the same time. Since then, I have had every single naturally occurring color, and quite a few unnatural colors. And yes, I mean EVERY color.

My hair has been blue-black, Ronald McDonald red, blue, green, orange, and my favorite- grey. Now, with all this coloring, you would think I am afraid of going grey. I'm not. I'm really looking forward to it. I think grey hair on a young face looks really dignified.

Why all the colors? Boredom. Curiosity. Adventure. For less than $10, I can become somebody completely new. With black hair, I am a siren. With red hair, I am passionate. With blonde, I am playful. With brown hair, I am classy. With grey hair, I am calm. And each of the strange colors bring different aspects out as well.

My worst hair mistakes? Orange. Orange hair isn't attractive. Especially not on me. And while I LOVE having my black hair, when I get tired of it, I cannot easily go to a different color. Especially since I want to get far away from the black, and end up trying to get it blonde. Trust me, it's difficult going from black to blonde. That's how I got grey one of the times. In fact, the roots were completely devoid of color. Right before they broke off, leaving me with very short hair. lol The green was bad because I did it right before I found out I was invited to meet my husband's family for the first time.

My favorites? Red. I am a cute redhead. lol It's my Irish blood. I also look very good with black. Brown is good if it is a dark brown.

People often ask, "What is your natural color." Hell if I know. It used to be blonde. Then it was brown. Last time I let it grow out long enough to see decent roots, it had a fair amount of red that I inherited from my dad. Even my natural hair gets bored with its own color apparently. lol

Fun!

Brenna Fender Says:

I've always been natural in terms of appearance (largely because I don't like frequent maintenance)so I didn't dye by hair at all until I had significant gray a few years back (I'm 34 now - for another few weeks). Then I just started using the kind of dye that washes out after 20 or 30 shampoos. I've started highlighting now because it disguises the grey for such a long time. Unfortunately, I got a little overzealous with the highlighting this time, and while I love the results I think I'm going to have some issues with roots...

How often do you dye your hair?

The temporary are both good

IntricateGirl's picture

The temporary are both good and bad. They are good because the color washes out, and when it does, it is easy to update it and make it look fresh. It's bad because it washes out (lol) and it doesn't always wash out evenly. I've also had a lot of bad luck with staining pillowcases with the temp dyes.

I love highlighting my hair, and I really lucked out. My husband is a MASTER at getting it perfect looking.

I typically do my hair about once a month, and I'm really going nuts right now because I am redoing my bathroom, so I'm restricted to baths instead of showers. That makes doing my own hair really difficult. I've got some pretty scary roots right now, but my husband has already told me that I can get it done somewhere soon.

Maybe the bright colors do more staining

Brenna Fender Says:

For me, I'm dyeing it pretty much my original brown (sometimes with red) and so it's pretty natural looking (not so according to my parents, but there you go). I've never had it come off on the pillow cases or be uneven.

Once a month keeps the roots pretty OK?

What color is your hair now?

Right now, it has faded some

IntricateGirl's picture
IntricateGirl Says:

Right now, it has faded some (reds REALLY degrade in color quickly) but it was a VERY bright red on top, with black underneath. It was like a classy punk color. lol I think when I get it done next, I am going all out punk, and doing it black with Ronald McDonald red, quarter inch streaks throughout. When I get sick of the black, I will either do temporary dyes until I grow it out enough to cut the black off, or I will bleach it enough to dye it dark brown.

Lol. No I don't. But I

Lol. No I don't. But I have worked at places in the past where it was perfectly acceptable (and even encouraged) to have wildly colored hair.

just started dying.....

i never landed any hair jobs that consisted of coloring my hair...just chopping it in every way imaginable. i woudl have rather had it dyed. but now that the little grays are popping in here and there, i have taken to doing temporary glosses with color. i cant remember the last one i bought but it didnt have ammonia and gave my hair a really nice golden undertone even though it is naturally dark brown. i am using the john frieda glossifier thingy (my brain isnt working and i am too lazy to get up and look at the bottle right now) and i really like it. i have always wondered what it owuld be like to go red or honey blonde.....

With your current picture, I

With your current picture, I can see you with something like Herbal Essences Spiced Terra. It's a medium reddish brown. Or maybe if you want to go especially wild, but not quite as wild as I do (lol) try Hydrience Ruby Twilight. Based on the last pic you had up, I can see honey blonde as well. There's lots of good blonde shades out there.

I honestly don't remember.

I honestly don't remember. I have tried every single brand, and I can tell you that my favorite is Hydrience (good even color, good scent, very gentle), and my least favorite is Feria (god-awful stench despite the scent packet, splotchy color, fades unevenly). Herbal Essences has some excellent colors, but for some reason, I rarely use it, so I can't remember. Sorry.

no problem!

ModelMom Says:

i'll give it a try anyways! and will steer clear of the feria! i just have really crappy hair. i inherited my dad's european hair and not my mom's cuban hair. so it breaks pretty easily, dries out....all that fun stuff.

Mine should be awful with

IntricateGirl's picture
IntricateGirl Says:

Mine should be awful with all the things I do to it, but I've been really lucky. I don't know whose hair I got, because neither of my parents had great hair. Oh well. I am thankful for it. lol

I think a lot of it is that the only damage I do to it is coloring it. No hair dryer, no curling iron, etc. But even when I did, I was still pretty lucky with it.
