grunge at 50

guitars intrude at noon
concrete fuzz under gravelpit vocal
the dungeon beat beneath

the trained part
the gray part
not music

but another matches the pulse

i was there once
fighting communism to the last teenager
because our sins are better than theirs
and i am the teen with the question
why must all my tomorrows yield
to universal losers

most are still with us
those who would not be fooled again

yet here we are
new bosses
fighting terrorism to the last teenager
because our sins are better than theirs

the old songs mean
     send mail
     drink sugarwater
     hail to the shortstop
they have been bought

but listen
it is the same drum

That just about tells it

That just about tells it like it is. It reminds me of my only experience with communists - in the early 80's when I attended a conservative university. The communists came to campus to talk during lunch hour. They were almost universally shouted down. No one would let them speak. I didn't care one hoot for communism, but I felt their ideas should have spoken for themselves - not this way, to not let them talk. (Anyone advocating violence should be dealt with, and it would be good if we really did something about terrorisim - but we havent yet).

A recent Williams College episode

A few years ago, reported on Maine Public Radio. I blogged about it somewhere, can't remember now, am supposed to be somewhere else in ten minutes so won't look it up. The Iraq attack is being talked about but hasn't happened yet. Faculty of Vietnam vintage take up signs and go to the cafeteria for a peaceful protest. Students rise up and bodily remove them. Speaker on Maine PR is a Bush admin functionary. He praises the students to the skies for their patriotism. Kristallnacht Amerika. I'm still ashamed.
