Granny had a grimace. It was right there on her face.
Where she usually kept her smile, there was a frown now in its place.
She was staring at Conundrum, he’s our family’s little pup.
But Conundrum looked pathetic, and he wouldn’t look back up.
He was sitting with his tail, which always wags, between his legs.
There was no sign of his tongue, which always slobbers when he begs.
His ears were even drooping, it was like he was ashamed,
Which made sense as I soon found, it turns out he was being blamed.
Between Conundrum and my Granny, on the carpet was a stain.
Then my Granny said, “I told you that a pup was hard to train.
Now just look, this rug is ruined! Tell me who’s to clean it up?
When she glared at me I hung my head, pathetic as my pup.
“I will clean it, I told Granny. “Yes, you will! She said to me.
I said, “I’m sorry ‘bout Conundrum, but I guess he had to…
“Seeeeee here now my little grandson, that’s the thing about a dog.
Between the slobber and the puddles they make everyplace a bog!
Then my Granny and the puppy cocked their heads to hear a sound,
Like the drip, drip, drip of water that was dripping on the ground.
When we looked up at the ceiling something dripped on Granny’s head.
When a drip fell on the carpet, Granny’s face turned crimson red.
“Oh, my goodness! she exclaimed. Then up the stairs she quickly ran.
“It’s a leak! she yelled back down. “Go get a bucket, or a pan!
“What is all of this, Conundrum?! Grandpa scratched the puppy’s ears.
When my Granny came back down the stairs, her eyes were full of tears.
“I was wrong about Conundrum. I apologize to you.
I was mad at that sweet puppy for a thing he did not do.
“Well I’m sure that they’ll forgive you, said my Grandpa with a wink.
“I don’t know how they ever could – I saw that stain, I didn’t think.
I put both my arms around her and said, “Granny, it’s alright.
When she knelt to pet Conundrum, it was such a funny sight.
Now, Conundrums tail was wagging, and his tongue was hanging out.
He had obviously forgotten what the fuss was all about.
He bounded toward my Granny – jumped right up and licked her face!
Then a smile replaced the grimace that had vanished with no trace.
