Granma Newspaper Website

www.granma.cu is the web site of the Granma newspaper, in its digital version and directed to the international public. This newspaper is the Official Organo of the Communist Party of Cuba, which constitutes the governing party in the island and the only one legally authorized. Its name comes from the boat used by the expedition that came from Mexico to the island under the command of Fidel Castro to begin the revolutionary fight that finally prevailed in 1959.
Granma appears in Cuba with a daily frequency, except Sundays. Its edition counts on 6 to 8 pages like average, although a version of Granma International is also published with a greater number of pages and directed to the public outside the island. This last one has a weekly frequency. The newspaper in its national version has sections for national and international news, arts and sports. Also it is possible to find commentaries on historical subjects according to the every day's events.
The web site is an extended version of the printed edition. It has sections for News, Nationals, International, Sports, Culture, Economy, Science/Technology, Tourism and Government. In addition you will find a variety of links to different cuban sites, other newspapers and varied information related to the tourism. The site is available in English, French, Portuguese, German Spanish, and Italian and there you will be able to register to receive the printed edition of the newspaper.
Given the governmental character of this publication, is custom that serves to present official declarations and opinions. It is a rumor very spread in the island that many editorials of Granma are written up personally by Fidel Castro himself. Also, it publishes the speeches and interventions of the political leaders, in which case the edition extends to a greater number of pages.
In Cuba the written media as of another type is exentos of commercial propaganda, therefore in Granma you won't find announcements nor propaganda in the style of the press of other countries. The approaches, content and opinions that appear in this newspaper have a noticeable political shade because they represent the official opinion of the Cuban government and its party. However, the Granma newspaper is an obligatory reference at the time of evaluating the Cuban context and know the goverment point of view about what is happening in Cuba or its international references.
