From Fox Sports, we have word that Goose Goosage went off on his not being selected.
Gossage, a former Yankees' fireballer, seems angry that he failed to get into the Hall of Fame despite the fact that he has, among other things, more career saves, victories, and strikeouts (948) than Sutter.
"I just can't believe Sutter got in before me," Gossage added."He deserved it. I was hoping Sutter and I could go in together. ... I don't know if I ever will make it."
"You know what, I never hear from these guys who don't vote for me," Gossage said. "But I'll take on any writer, anywhere, on any show, and I will bury him."
First of all Gossage comes off as ingracious towards Sutter. There's a reason Sutter got in first, he's been retired 6 six years long and working his way up to get support. That's why he made it in first. Unless your name is Eckersley or Rollie Fingers, you have to fight your way in.
Second thing he's doing is giving into despair. He's got 8 more years of elligibility left and no one got such a high percentage of the vote without getting in. What he's done is really offend some voters, particularly when he went off on some other choices:
The "Goose's" feelings concerning Rice's snub were particularly strong as he called it a "joke" that the Twins' Kirby Puckett was elected on the first ballot. Rice meanwhile is now 0-for-12 in Hall entry attempts.
"If Jim Rice had played in the Metrodome, he would have torn the place down, and that's nothing against Kirby Puckett, that's just the way it is," Gossage said.
He's dissing Puckett whether he means to or not and also by extension the voters, the very people who will get to decide his fate. Eric at Sports Music Blog wondered out loud if this would hurt Goose:
It's also going to be interesting to see if voters punish Gossage for complaining; they've done it before. Leo Durocher once said if the Hall didn't put him in while he was alive, he didn't want to go in after he was dead. But 3 years after he died, the Hall did that exact thing in 1994. Don't mess with the voters.
I don't think it'll be that severe, but I think its going to cost him a year, maybe two in terms of actually reading the Hall. Personality plays a role in this (which is why boys and girls, Albert Belle only got 7.7% of the vote) and not being friendly for the writers is going to cost, so he's looking at 2008, maybe 2009 until he gets inducted. Hopefully he'll be a little wiser then.
