GO!

Open Floor Dance & The Movement Collective presented GO! This weekend at Dance Forum. Due to my extreme involvement to the show this review will have a bias. My choreography debuted in New York at this show as well.
"Everyday" is a piece in which I blended video and dance together. The piece explored the non-relationship between strangers on the street. We pass by so many people everyday without or very little contact whether physically or with our eyes. What you are going through in your life is probably going to overlap or in parallel with that person sitting across you in the subway/bus/etc. I shot scenes of people standing, crossing the street, walking, etc. as well as some dance/choreographed sequences combining dance and pedestrian movement for the video. While the dance is going on the video is projected onto a screen behind the dancers. I had fun choreographing the piece and shooting the video sequences.
I was also in "Holding On", "One last word", and "Live Action Space Balls". Both "Holding On" and "One last word" is The Movement Collective's new repertory.
"Holding On" - a piece choreographed by Renee Gonzalaz is set to an instrumental spanish guitar music. The movement goes around in a very linear pattern with squares, diagonals as formation choices. At times the movement feels very choppy with running in between sequences as the transitions. Even being a performer in the piece, I feel truncated in my movement choices because of the transitions. Its like oh, this phrase goes here and then that phrase goes there. A start and stop feel to it.
"One Last word" - choreographed by Molly Campbell is set to the beautiful and heartbreaking song "Goodbye my lover" by James Blunt. The piece is about heartbreak and loss. She went through a hard break up with a lover of the past and still recovering now. As a dancer/choreographer, I know how that feels and how important it is to use art as a tool to taking the step to finally getting over something so heart shattering as a breakup with someone you loved. The piece is modern jazz and very sentimental. I have grown to really like doing this piece because of its emotions. I haven't done a jazz dance since I was in high school so this almost like a flashback to the past. Molly gave me a moment to shine in this piece thus I'm not going to say anymore about the piece.
