Although many people have decided that the global warming phenomenon is hard science, there are others who still have plenty of unanswered questions. Driven by fear of impending destruction for planet earth, 'the many' say there is no more time for talk or questions. Rather, we must act now to save the planet.
In my reading I have recently come across two reasons why it is too early to jump in with both feet. (I am sure there are more.)
First we consider Al Gore, probably the most public face on this issue in the Unites States. When I listen to him make his case, he causes me to wonder. He was recently interviewed by the Sun (UK). This is one thing the reporter said following that interview, "He believes we have just TEN YEARS to begin saving the planet before it is too late."
Now we are talking about global climate here, and we are discussing that which must be measured over hundreds of years to see a change. And yet Guru Gore has determined that 10 years from now is the drop dead date for fixing the problem. This is not science, this is political hype designed to induce fear. Why would the guy who supposedly knows so much find it necessary to resort to alarmist messages?
Secondly, consider Mayor John Hickenlooper, Denver, Colorado. Mayor Hickenlooper is responding to the global warming issue just as many other mayors are. 'Action is needed now' is the cry heard throughout the land. So the Mayor and his people developed a 'climate action plan'. This is a plan that will impose upon the people of Denver restrictions and financial pressure for the sake of saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. The inconvenient part is that after 12 years of successful implementation, the sacrifice made by the people of Denver will have made no difference in the war against global warming. I've written plenty about that in three links below.
We would all do well when talking about global warming to strip away the political agendas and look at the best data possible (with common sense).
