Girl Commits Suicide over MySpace Prank

adults | MySpace | pranks | Suicide

This story was pretty bad also; I'd assumed most people would know about it already, but since no one else has written about it, I will.

It's about this 13 year old girl in St. Louis committed suicide after being dumped by a 13 year old boy on MySpace after a relatively short online relationship. The thing is, however, it wasn't really a 16 year old boy; it was the parents of another 13 year old girl who used to be best friends with the young girl that killed herself.

The parents, who have not been named, said they were trying to figure out what this girl might have been saying about their family, so they set it up as a way for them to spy on the girl. Then, when they felt they'd had enough, they posted a note on that site which said "The world would be a better place without you."

Now, the worst thing about all of this is that, it seems, no real crime has been committed. This isn't a case, supposedly, where the adults were preying on a child for sex, and because of that, they're legally absolved of any criminal intent. In town, however, things have gotten so bad, because everyone there knows who it is, that the police have set up extra security to patrol the neighborhood.

The newspapers say they won't print the parent's names because the daughter still goes to school there; are you kidding me? These people should have left a long time ago, and taken their kid with them. The parents of the girl that committed suicide have since broken up because of the incident, and are working on the divorce.

And people wonder why I don't trust MySpace, and I'm an adult without kids!

horrible

why on earth would the parents CARE what that girl was saying???? That's what gets me about all this. Why didn't they just go to the girls parents if she was creating such havock. It just doesn't make sense! All this devistation over nothing. Well, I still use myspace and know it can cause problems. I just do my best to keep out of them and try to keep mindfull of who I allow on my friends list.

It just seems to me, Spooky,...

that this is one of those things where we all feel there just had to be some kind of crime committed, but the law can't keep up with the technology. I remember hearing way back on how some drugs in the 60's took awhile before they were made illegal because the laws hadn't caught up with some of those types of manufactured drugs.

So much for the Constitution at times, eh?

I know about it first hand!

like, how it's a felony to harrass someone over the phone, but not via email. How much does that suck!? I think what's sadder here is that we need to keep up with new crimes and changing the laws! When will we just be good people and keep to ourselves????

Yes they do,...

however, it would seem, they don't have a "legal" responsibility to do so.

We finally have a name,...

of the woman who created the MySpace page that led to this girl committing suicide. It's Lori Drew, and I think it was about time someone outed this woman for her cruelty. I mean, the parents of the girl are divorcing because of the strain of this thing, and more police are patrolling these people's house because of the outrage of the stupidity, so yes, they should be named.

And no, I don't feel better, but I feel justified.

Sad story isn't it

Hey Catfish, I just got more details on this story from you. Earlier in the morning today I just wrote a blog about this here on Bloggerparty. Sorry, I did not know you had already blogged about it. Only yesterday did I hear about this story on the radio. Little did I know that I could have just read the catfish blog weeks ago :) But this is a really sad story ain't it.

Yes it is, Mrhobbie,...

and I hate that kind of abuse of responsibility, if you know what I mean.

Big Time Update

breaking news; looks like federal prosecutors have indicted the mother that caused the little girl to commit suicide in St. Louis today on one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress. I didn't even know there was such a law; wow!
