Ginkgo: Great for the brain train
SLIPPING on a pip from a Ginkgo tree in Latham Street Napier ten year’s ago, sowed the seed for an idea that has germinated into a new industry for New Zealand that will see our region lead the world organically with the Southern Hemisphere’s first commercial planting of Ginkgo, which has already generated contracts building to around $2.5m in exports.
After nine years of investigating the market, Nature Green Ltd trialled the first commercial planting of off the motorway between Napier and Hastings, where today 24,000 trees flourish. With a further 30,000 seeds in the ground, they should reach their planting target of 30 hectares by 2010.
