Getting Into the Speakeasy

As I've posted here and like a dozen other places, I don't know exactly what happened to keep some people from being able to log into The Speakeasy over the weekend. We'll call it a Raid and things had to cool off for a bit so the bulls didn't come creeping back around, but in all honesty, I'm busted. I dunno.

Still, I found that you should see a button at the top which says Restore Session. When you click it, it says, "Your session has expired," then prompts you for your confirmation. In your profile, you can change this to whatever you like - from yo mama's maiden name to whatever, but if you choose to (or simply didn't set it), it's just your password.

I had a few folks try it lately and they've had no problems, but...

Although I have not added any mods to the thing, I can have like full profiles on there, where you can do the whole "Who I am, what I'm about, I like men who..." all that stuff you can do - favorite books, and so on - but I want to make sure everything's flying right with the basic setup first before I get so many extra bells and whistles that it becomes a morass of "it could be THAT, or it could be THIS, etc." just in case something like this comes up again. But as things stand right now, you can still add your site and/or blog to your paltry profile and it will show up at the bottom of all your posts, so there's a great chance to get some more hits.

Admin messages can only be posted by me right now because no one else has signed up to be moderators or managers. Admin msgs show up in EVERY forum and you cannot reply to them directly, even though you can always start a new thread about them. That thread only shows up in the forum you posted it in, so I may make one of the Waitstaff forums an admin-reply thingy.

That's why I'd really love for more people to get involved - not just to give me suggestions but also because, the more people use it, the more they'll tend to do whatever they want with it and the forums will develop a life and focus of their own.

Still, there's a lot more to come, I just hate to spend hours more on it until I have a better handle on how things work and I really don't have time to change things, post fake msgs to myself, go back and see how they work, change things, go back and delete them all, etc., etc.

Forums and messageboards are great ways to promote your blogs, as well as establish yourself as an authority on whatever subject(s) you are interested in and/or blog about.

My big problem

was going anywhere after sign-in. I didn't see anywhere to start a post/thread and nowhere to read anything someone had posted.

Update Session

You may need to hit Update Session at the top of the screen, where it has all the options for logging in and such. If you are not seeing the little pictures and the names of the forums, you are not logged in properly.

As soon as I get done with all the blogging I have to do before the end of today, I'll try some drastic measures, but I am having no problems getting in and out as I wish.

YOU CANNOT REPLY TO ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGES, PERIOD. I CANNOT EVEN REPLY TO ADMIN MESSAGES. They are just like those e-mails you sometimes receive that say, "Do not reply to this message because this is a robot."

Unfortunately for most people, The Speakeasy - not unlike basically everything else in life - takes a few moments of playing-around with to figure out. There are ample Help files which don't take more than 30 seconds to read; they tend to explain the myriad words in the unique vocabulary, like "Post" and "Reply." But I also know, from having tried many times over to "give back to the community" that most people are far too self-absorbed and self-involved to bother to take the time to read them or actually just TRY things.

Sorry if I sound... no, really, I'm not. If you can afford a $1500 computer and Internet bill and you can't figure out how to use it, you can afford to pay me to show you how.

I DID

"play around" with it and still got nowhere. I even tried coming into it from another direction and came up with the same issues. I made the point of commenting my problems with the site as an FYI - that maybe it's something else you need to look into. But, seeing how you assume I'm just not smart enough or not trying hard enough for your tastes - I've now decided not to bother myself with it. Sure, creating your own site is a hard task, but gives you no right to be an asshole. This "flapper" and her $1500 computer has perminently left the building!

SHOCK AND AWE!

Actually, I wasn't specifically referring to you, dear. I have made like 4 posts in the last week or so about people sending me their requests to review their works, sites, and so forth, mention their conventions, etc., etc., with things like "RE: BUSINESS" in the subject line. I have made that point clear as can be, and yet, they keep doing it, so then I get e-mails about what jerks we are and how we're not "real fans" and they're going to do this and say that and they've got their own blogs, etc.

My car broke down and we had to ask for a ride to the emergency room and the cats who we asked - who are the same ones I've talked about on here for being so nuts - told us "We have plans"!!!!!! Because her mama had a crush on me - A 76 YEAR-OLD WOMAN! - I...

Just so you know, the host I use told me they have been having server troubles, so that is most likely the problem...

But while we're on the subject, Spooky? You're a flake and a liar anyway. And seeing as how you don't have anywhere else to put you, your kid, or the rest of your crap, how about I give you a suggestion as to where you can store your $1500 POS computer you can't work anyway?

Bad day to pick a fight with someone smarter than you. Besides, The Weirding wants intelligent people to discuss pop-culture and interesting things; get an AOL account.

A personal attack??

Funny, someone "smarter than me" wouldn't stoop to such a low level. I won't even get into the other crap - it's just not worth it. But, for the record, I NEVER would have attcked you personally! And bringing my kid into it??? Ya, I'm now quite happy to not know you anymore.

Uh, Ouch!

Spooky is supposed to divine all of this how??? And even if she can figure out that you're having a bad day, how does that become her problem?

You may not have started out by talking about her specifically, but I can definitely see where she got that impression.

I'm Done

The last post I wrote says it all. This isn't WritingUp. I've been here for about a year now and have always enjoyed myself. Then the WU crowd showed up.

And HOW GAUCHE! YOU WERE THE ONE TALKING ABOUT YOUR KID ON YOUR LAST POST!

You're so self-absorbed you don't even know when someone else is talking about you talking about yourself.

Wow!?!

About a month ago you offered spooky a place to put her, her crap and her kid. What changed all that? One bad day or people asking why your sites not working? What the fuck is going on around here??? Everybody take a deep breath. I really thought you two were friends. And that's a pretty big 1500.00 computer, I don't think it will fit where you want her to put it.

Spooky and My Computer

manodogs's picture
manodogs Says:

Yeah, thanks for joining.

I sure did. She said she was coming, then she wasn't, then she was, then in a month, then she wasn't, then we were going to move here, then there, then this, then that. I spent a couple hours explaining to her how to get her blog up and going and about affiliate programs and so forth, then she flaked-out on that, too.

I tried to help her as best I could. As far as I can tell, she just wanted me to "lend" her money and the rest of it was just bullshit. I don't need a roommate - especially not one that comes with a provision that I'd best put up all my cared-for things and be ready to watch their every move.

She's a flake. Period. End of story.

It wasn't one bad day; it was a series of misleading conversations and e-mails that culminated in my finally getting mad enough to say I'd had enough. We most certainly were "friends" - meaning to say that, you know, I met her online and I don't know much about her, but she seemed kinda cool or whatever and I have been in that situation myself and I was trying to do what I hope others would be willing to do for me, should I ever be in that situations again.

She shit on me and I took it for as long as I could and then I had a bad run of luck and got right over it.

P.S.: As to the computer and her capacities? I say: "butter." Lots and lots of butter.

You sure put a lot of time and effort into this. The site is great.
