Get Ready for the Beach!

Are you considering starting on the South Beach Diet to get into shape for summer? It has won the admiration of thousands of successful dieters, many of whom had failed at countless other diets.

Of course, check with your doctor before starting ANY diet. Once you have the approval of your physician, you can get down to the business of losing weight . . .

The South Beach Diet consists of three distinct phases, beginning with the strictest. In Phase One, which lasts just two weeks, you get to eat normal sized portions of lean meats, seafood, vegetables, eggs and nuts. You can even have healthy fats (think olive or fish oil). Since you don't have to eat super-small portions, you really don't have to feel hungry.

What you MUST avoid in Phase One is all bread, pasta, rice or sweets. None -- not a single bite. But remember, it's only for 2 weeks.

On day 15, you get to move into Phase Two, which is less restrictive. You can have whole wheat breads and pasta. Brown rice is okay. Fruits and even a small amount of chocolate (yeah!) can be a part of your daily diet. You don't have to do away with carbs; you just have to choose them wisely. Same goes for fats -- the healthy ones are allowed.

Phase Two lasts until your swimsuit fits! When you have reached your healthiest weight, you are ready for Phase Three, which is a lifelong eating plan.

In Phase Three, you eat an even more flexible version of the foods from Phase Two. You make the majority of your food choices from lean protein sources, fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Your doctor will love you! You are permitted to indulge your sweet tooth with a little dark chocolate (dip a few strawberries!) and have a glass of wine with dinner. When a special occasion arises, of course you can have a small slice of birthday cake -- one.

When followed correctly, the South Beach Diet is healthy and works very well.
