This breed has succeeded, perhaps more than any other, in attaining an extraordinary popularity throughout the entire world. The German Shepherd, often know as a Wolf Dog or Police Dog is especially adapted to pastoral life. He has developed into an excellent watchdog and has proved his worth in the pursuit of smugglers, as a help to the wounded, and in general, fulfills the role of the perfect companion.

The German Shepherd, pride of German breeding, has spread over all the continents. He is also referred to as the Alsatian Shepherd.

He is supposed to have descended from the crossing of wolves and domestic dogs, going back to a relatively recent era.

Some people think that the German Shepherd comes originally from Wurttemberg and Thuringia where his ancestors were used to guard the flocks from very ancient times. Others believe that his origins should be sought in the dog of a bronze age, 7000 BC.

According to the information we now have, as well as the study of the wild forms that have survived through the centuries allows us to state that, among the representatives of the group which constituted the stock of the race, the tendency to variation has been limited, and all members share common affinities with the representatives of the wild canines.
