Genealogy & Family History
Genealogy – An ancestral collection of names and dates (pedigree)
Family History – researching forebears to find out how and where they lived.
Preserving your precious family photographs can trigger your desire to delve into your own family history. Once you realise the importance of preserving and journaling your own photos for future generations to enjoy, you may want to look back through your generations, or often an old photograph will spark an interest in wanting to know more.
The most important part of researching your family history is to be accurate. Start with yourself and work backwards to your parents, grandparents and so on. Speak to family members. Births, deaths and marriages can be useful, although there can be stipulations with the type of information they will provide and there may also be fee’s involved.
It may be useful to join a family history, genealogy or historical group (there are quite a number of these organisations on the internet). They can show you the right way to go about your research.
I have been lucky enough to have access to my family history and being from convict lines, sent to Australia in the first fleet – this has sparked a lot of interest in knowing more about my heritage. My 12 year old daughter has already made her own scrapbook with all this information.
Researching and scrapbooking your Family History can be a very rewarding project to assign yourself.
