Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord
Having introduced the gospel as being about God’s Son - Paul cannot move on without making two important statements about him.
Firstly, Paul declares that he was a “descendant of David as regards his human nature. In other words, Jesus of Nazareth was a human being, descended from the family line of King David of Israel. This fact is in agreement with the gospel record which places Jesus as a physical descendant of David through his mother Mary (Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 1:27).
In their zeal to affirm the divinity of Jesus Christ, many people ignore the fact that he was also fully human. He had a human body and soul. He had human ancestors and was a member of a human family.
Not just any human, of course. Jesus was a descendant of David - a fact we shall see later in the book of Romans as being significant in his fulfilment of the messianic prophecies.
