Frida "I Know There's Something Going On"

Anyone who listened to the radio in the '70s (or has an affinity for oldies radio) knows the voice of Ann-Frid Lyngstad even if the name doesn't register. As one of the two female vocalists in the Swedish quartet ABBA, Lyngstad was heard on many of the biggest pop hits of the period. She also managed to nearly make the US Top Ten on her own as she stepped out of the group for a 1982 solo effort entitled Something's Going On under the shortened monkiker of Frida.

With Phil Collins producing, the album was harder edged than ABBA's sweet, pop confections, but that fact didn't stop both the album and the single "I Know There's Something Going On" from chart success. With its cavernous drum sound, the song demanded attention from its intro, permiated by an almost eerie, paranoid vibe only underscored by the lyrics and Frida's disemboidied, slightly robotic vocals. If she wanted to distance her solo career from ABBA, she succeeded.

Released as a single toward the end of '82, "I Know There's Something Going On" steadily climbed the pop charts, making it as far as #13 in April of '83. The song also was popular in dance clubs and was well-received on many rock-leaning stations as well, giving the red-headed singer a hit that might not have topped the charts as she had with ABBA but certainly broadened her audience for a brief time.
