I was actually struggling somewhat with the headline here. "The Newest Literary Craze" actually sounded better to the ear, but in this case, even those who contribute to this new genre admit, it's not terribly "literary". So what is "fratire"? It's what many call the equivalent of chick lit for men. What does this include? From what I've read, stories, some autobiographical, of men getting drunk, manipulating and "scoring" with women and other exhibitions of masculine prowess. Is this literature or a college guy's account of his weekend?
Needless to say, as a woman, fratire holds no real appeal for me, but then I don't care for chick lit either. Apparently though, fratire is only new to print publication. It had it's beginnings on the Internet, generating mailing lists of thousands of young men interested in this genre. However, it didn't catch on in publishing houses. Many claimed interest in a male alternative to chick lit, but showed no real interest when they actually saw it. So having been given a chance at print publishing, a number of fratire authors are seeing some success.
For anyone, who wanting more information on these books or author's websites, there is a New York Times article that will fill you in on more details. Also, anyone who has read some of the titles mentioned in this article, feel free to share your thoughts on it.
