Feeling sorry for myself

allergies | family life | toddlers

First off, I'm ashamed to admit how far I've fallen behind in this blog. The thing is, I keep thinking that I need to "catch up" before I can post something new. So I don't post anything new. That's dumb, I know.

So I just wrote the following drivel to my "parents of allergic kids" email group and thought I'd post it here, just to show that I'm alive in blog-land. Will post that "catch up" message someday - or not.

"I just watched a video of my cousin-in-law's daughter, who is two months older than my daughter (so she's almost 16 months old). She ate yogurt with a spoon, and some other food. She played on carpet (carpet! I can't imagine) with her two big dogs. She looked normal and happy.

And suddenly I feel really sad.

My daughter, for those of you who don't know me, can eat Neocate (which is a special-order, hypoallergenic formula), rice, green beans, and pears - and that's it. She doesn't eat much or often. Food is a constant battle. She's allergic to everything in the environment, including our two remaining dogs (although we've been able to control those allergies comfortably with Claritin so far). My son is hideously allergic to the environment so we don't have carpet, and we certainly avoid dog licks.

And so, just for a minute, I'd like a normal life.

Sorry for the vent."

Welcome back me, lol!

Thank you!

I'm really not a "feel sorry for myself" person. I find it counterproductive and bad for my mental health. But my mental health has taken a beating this year, so I guess it's not a surprise that some wayward thoughts are creeping in. Long live 2008 - may it suck far less than its predecessor!

Thanks for the luck! I'll take it!

I'm all for "sucking less"

I'm sorry to hear that your kids have such alleriges! I've heard in the past how much "simple allergies" can be down right deadly for some kids. I get ya, there. When you're the parent of a sickly child, all you do is long for normalcy. Mine, thank the lord, has become much stronger and we haven't had a trip to the ER in about a year!!!! YAY!!! And, I remember when that was a wish on my list! So, it can happen! Just keep positive! They'll get there!

ER visits, ESH!

You know at least we haven't had to visit... wait, I think I'll stop that right there. So far we've done an urgent care or two, but that's all.

Thanks so much for the uplifting talk, spookyyank!

You know, Brenna

When it comes to her health, she's like a normal kid now! But, I'll never forget the fears - the constant worry - fearing any bug of any kind that would lead to illness and seizures! She hasn't had one since Texas and even a couple months ago we all were exposed to bacterial meningitis and she didn't get sick!

It's good to talk about this stuff and we'll be here to "talk ya down from the ledge!" LOL

brennnnnna!!

i have fallen off of here lately too but have thought about you and your little ones and wondered how everything was going. this post you wrote really touched me. i am so sorry about all the allergy madness. i feel you. none of my friends have kids with allergies even when the parents do. my son tested positive for peanuts and is on zyrcam every night to control his allergy to weeds & grasses (living in a very green state is a curse now). the allergist said there was nothing we could have done to make things better....call it bad genes if you will. it sucks. what is the site for parents with allergic kids that you go to? i could use some advice and other moms to rant with about this.

i really hope 2008 is better for you and that your little ones outgrow their allergies!!

Model Mom!

So nice to hear from you! I need to mail you privately, actually, because I have an "idea" that could involve you :)

We've had a few rough days. Yesterday I spent 1.5 hours at the pediatric lab with my two kids waiting for the girl to get her blood taken. It ran into lunchtime and, not anticipating that kind of a wait, I had no food on hand for the boy (I always have food for the girl because, you know, she can only eat three things so it's not like I can just run into the 7-11 and pick her up some chips). I also discovered that I had no MONEY either to buy some Cheetos from the snack machine. It actually turned out better than it sounds because, being a pediatric lab, there were several kids there and the boy kept himself busy.

The good news is that the bloodwork came out normal, which means that she is most likely really just a very, very, very allergic child, and not a child with a horrid disease. The bad news is that today she broke out in hives from this week's test food - apples. I was SO EXCITED about the possibility of dried apples and apple juice.

Now I have to WAKE HER UP every 6 hours to administer Atarax to reduce the hives because as you probably know, a child with hives could go into shock at any time. And naturally, she's not been sleeping well for the last several days because of the apples, so I'm dead tired. Ah, it's a wonderful life we lead!

Hmmm, this is long enough for a blog entry of its own. Methinks I might copy and paste :)

So, MM, how are you? How's the littlest one and her big brother? How's the new place?

hey brenna!

definitely email me! i am still using my hotmail account. i have yet to fully move over to gmail so i tend to forget i have that account...oops! do you still have my hotmail email? same as the gmail one but with the @hotmail.com at the end. would love to hear what your idea is and to keep in better contact. seems like we have quite a bit in common.

things are well over here. my boys is doing so much better now that he is on zyrtec. he was taking claritin but it wasnt stopping his pluggy nose symptoms. the zyrtex also helps his eczema. my eczema is acting up worse than ever this year as well. it's always just been a tiny patch here and there but now my entire right leg is broken out. stress. gotta love it and what it does to your body. my son's eczema goes away during the summer and spring and comes back as soon as it gets cold and wet. doc says it has something to do with the dry air from heaters. etc. god i wish we could afford to move to LA NOW!!!!! but the peanut allergy thing still kills me. i prayed that i wouldnt ever have a kid with that allergy years before i even so much as met my husband. ok, stop the whining.....

baby girl is good too. she seemed fine with the allergy thing until i gave her some gerber crunchies and she broke out in tiny hives around her mouth. the only inredient in those that she hadnt been exposed to before was garlic so i think that may be the culprit. i hate food allergies. hate them. i jsut dont understand why they are so rampant!

i hope your little one gets over her hives soon! poor thing. but i am glad her blood work came out fine. is the allergist saying these are temporary food allergies? is she allergic to enviro stuff too?

anyways, yeah...message me! we have much to catch up on! :-)

I forgot to tell you

The food allergy group is called TerrificKidsWFA and it's at yahoogroups.com. Let me know if you need more info.

Sorry about your daughter and the hives. Maybe that was just a contact allergy of sorts. I'm being hopeful for you :)

Both my kids have environmental allergies as well (as do I). The boy is taking Clarinex right now with a reasonable amount of success. The girl is taking Claritin and so far that's working for her. The boy used to take Singulair but I recently figured out that it was contributing to his behavior problems, so I chucked it!!

In theory, the girl should grow out of at least some of the food allergies. We've got a long road to get there though, I think.

Will send you an email soon, maybe tomorrow!

THANKS!

singulair!

i'm so glad you just responded to me with this bit of info in it. our pedi wanted to put our son on singulair. thank god the allergist gave him zyrtec instead. that just makes him sleepy so we give it to him @ night.

i am praying that my little one's hives are from contact with the garlic too.....ugh. i gace her those crunchy things twice a week apart and she had the same reaction both times....i tasted them and they were pretty good but after eating a decent portion of them my tongue started itching and i am not allergic to any foods anymore (strawberries & egg whites as a child but outgrew them by puberty). weird. anyways, those got tossed into the garbage right away. my son actually had a similar reaction to cinnamon after i put some in his yogurt last week. not hives but the redness around the mouth. he's never had issues with cinnamon before but i googled and have read that its a common contact intolerance for a lot of people. the thing is (as you well know) once your kid reacts in any way to any food you get into paranoid mode real quick!

definitely email me and i am gonna check out that yahoo group! i saw another group, forget what its called...something like kids with food allergies dot com but they had a membership fee you had to pay if you wanted to post on it. i just dont have that kind of expendable income at the moment. aaah!

I can identify with that.

Last year, I complained about the skin around my eyes getting red, swollen, cracked, and so raw that they were actually bleeding. It made me so self-conscious, because my eyes were practically glowing red. I saw several doctors and none of them could figure out what was going on. Finally, an allergist figured it out. The thing you said about dry air is so true. My eyes didn't break out until October of last year, and didn't clear up until I saw the allergist in June! I've been terrified that it's going to come back this winter, because it makes me so self-conscious. Not only can I not hide my eyes in public, but it aged me a lot. My eyes used to be my best feature, and this caused way too much damage to them. :S

Oh well, grumble, grumble. At least now I know what it is, and have a few medicines to treat it. So it could be a lot worse.

Wow!

That must have been so painful!!!!

Was it just the air or was it something that grows or blooms this time of year?

IG....your eyes!

did you see an allergist? my son has had the same thing and we thought it was that he was rubbing at his itchy eyes at night.....his pedi had no better explanation but we took him to an allergist that also specializes in allergy related dermatology and immediately told us it was eczema. eczema around the eyes and on the eyelids never crossed my mind. i had no idea it was possible. he prescribed elidel and when his eyes start getting itchy or slghtly red we put it on with a layer (light) of vaseline over it to seal it in and it is gone is a couple of hours.

cant wait till summer so we can all be healthy again! :-)

I did see an allergist.

From what I understand, it's fairly rare, although I've noticed a lot more people seem to have it lately. I use Elidel too, and I urge you to be careful with it, because it can burn. It's not really meant for eyes. But it does help me, so it's worth it when I need it. The vaseline was the only other thing that helped me, and the benefits were pretty slight. I think it helped because it kept some moisture in, and irritants out. I've never used them together though.

I don't know a lot about it.

From what I understand, it's an inflammatory response to an irritant. So it really could have been either. The doctor thinks it's because people spend more time indoors during the winter, and the air gets stale and nasty. The air dries your skin out (and possibly contains irritants), you scratch, and that often brings on a rash. (Good lord, I am discussing weird body rashes on a public blog!! lol)

I should say that I'm not 100% sure it was eczema in my case. I just know that he gave me a prescription eczema cream, and that's the only thing that helped, other than steroids. I really wasn't wearing any sort of makeup, hadn't colored my hair, etc. So it didn't seem to be exactly an allergy. But my eyes didn't really itch until AFTER they broke out. So it's still sort of a mystery.
