Eurythmics "Would I Lie To You?"

By 1985, the duo Eurythmics had established themselves as one of the '80s most innovative hitmaking forces for their stylistic brand of syntheized rock as well as a series of striking, groundbreaking videos. The previous year, they had scored a major smash with their album Touch which had delivered Top 40 singles with "Who's That Girl," "Right By Your Side," and the #4 hit "Here Comes The Rain Again."

So, it was no surprise that the first song from their 1985 album Be Yourself Tonight was quick to receive airplay. What was surprising was the sound. While Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart had shown a knack for musical versatility, they had never released a single as guitar-driven as "Would I Lie To You?" Not that it was a typical rock song. The addition of horns and soulful backing vocals gave the song a heavy R&B feel.

"Would I Lie To You?" proved to be a smash at practically every radio format. It became their sixth US Top 40 hit in a matter of two years and, in July, became their third Top Ten. The song would peak at #5 on the pop charts, #2 on the album rock charts, and #6 on the dance charts. The momentum would propel Be Yourself Tonight into the Top Ten on the album charts.
