Environmental Nazis

ModelMom's picture

Ok....some rather rude and completely unnecesary remark was left on one RealityCheck's blog postings today regarding her use of and SUV, etc. And it just reminded me of an experience I had with an overzealous environmentalist here in Portland a few months ago.

It was around 10:30pm and I had just finished doing a fashion show and was headed to my car alone. Portland is generally a safe city and I've never felt weird about walking alone at night given that there are lights on outside and other people milling about.

Well, as I am about to get into my vehicle a guy comes running up to me yelling "Hey SUV girl....you think you are so cute in your f ****g big car. You are murdering our environment bitch!!!" Whoah there buddy.....Being born & raised in Los Angeles I knew better than to stand there and defend myself. I quickly got into my car and left, albeit shakingly.

This guy was so verbally violent, and the fact that he was running at a full tilt towards me was really upsetting. I wish I had had the body mass and courage to tell him to bugger off. I drive a Honda CRV. If this enviro nazi knew anything he would know that a CRV is a FOUR CYLINDER vehicle. It uses up less gas than the beat up VW Beetle he probably drives...that is unless he is so destitute and anti-"the man" to get a real job so that he can afford anything other than a skateboard to get around on. And I wish I could've told him that no, jackass, I don't think I'm cute but I did just get paid more for 30 minutes of walking down a runway than you did all last month.

I am sick of people flinging their non founded opinions around like piles of offal. Shut up already! The stench that comes out of their mouths is far worse than any car emission. I believe in protecting the environment. I recycle religiously, buy organic, etc. But I also have a child and my family takes roadtrips to visit relatives.....and having a bigger vehicle like a CRV is both more comfortable, safer, and convenient for us. Why do people such as this insist on giving their fellow, pacifist environmental activists a bad name? It is really a shame. The behaviour this guy exhibited makes me not want to help out any of the activists that knock on my door or approach me on the street ever again.

Little Gal, Big Car

I just came across this post because I was actually searching for your post about those damn dogs cuz I wanted to read the comments. Anyway, yeah, people totally don't get the SUV thing.

1. An SUV is safe for children. Prior to my SUV I drove a 1971 Torino, a 1981 Corvette Stingray and a 2001 Mustang. So you tell me - with options like 4 wheel drive, REAL snow tires, etc, what is a SEAFER way to go? Do you know how many times I have been in near death situations with my "race cars". These cars are not ment for the winter, rainy days or even super hot weather.

2. And, oh, you wanna talk about GAS GUZZLERS - that Torino got a whopping 9 miles to the gallon, plus I had to add a lead additive everytime I filled up. The Vette was a little better at around 12 miles to the gallon and the mustang only took premium.

3. Kids don't fit well in two door cars! Bottom line. My husband drives a Stratus and he can't wait to get an SUV. It is a pain trying to fit a baby and a baby seat (rear facing cuz we're not Britney Spears) in that car!

So an SUV is a practical option. Actually I think I am giving my husband the SUV and I am getting a Hummer.

And I totally agree with the "comments". I hear crap all the time about "little girl big car". Yea, the SUV is sitting on 22's but do I need a ladder? No. So leave me alone. Do I make comments about fat people in little cars? No. then don't make comments about me.

And just how you said, I do love the environmant. We recycle and all that. I don't buy only organic stuff, BUT I grow junk in my garden during the summer.

SUV gals

no kidding! plus the fact that everyone else has a huge car on the road made me feel like nobody could see me when i was in my old civic. there was no way i was going to drive around with my son in a car that might as well be a skateboard next to a bumch of semi's. i cant tell you how often i almost got run off the road or hit during a lane change because i was in a smaller car and the dude or lady in the escalade couldnt see me. i could deal with it before i became a parent but when you do have a kid that whole mother hen thing kicks in ya know! and yeah...bending over to put a kid in a small car (especially with 2 doors) is just not an option unless all those "eco nazis" want to pay for my future back surgery.
