Easter Jamaican Style

bun and cheese

Ever since I was a little girl in Kingston, Jamaica we've had our Easter Bun and cheese. It had to be Maxfields Bun and Tasteee Cheese or nothing at all. But what's bun and cheese exactly?

Well when England took over Jamaica they introdued their hot cross buns to us at Lent. These buns were round pastry's with a cross branded on the center. The British no longer continue to eat it on a Good Friday or Easter Sunday but its big in the Caribbean.
There is a difference. We no longer have a cross on our bun and instead of flavoring the buns with honey as our colonizers did, we flavor it with molasses..yummy..and it has raisins and currants and various spices.

This year we had ours on Easter Sunday after a big dinner ..but not this past Good Friday..Oh well..the tradition continues at least.

Wanna know more about bun and cheese? Well the Jamaica Observer.
If you want to participate you can order your bun and cheese at Caribbean Food Delights. This link is to their national registry of stores. Or if you're in NY you can go to your local Royal Caribbean Bakery. If you're in Canada you can try for a Nicey's Food Mart.

my gf is from JA and she

my gf is from JA and she loves bun and cheese. me being a black american i dont really see what is so great. it ain't better than sweet potato pie, but that is an argument for another time. besides that, i dont really like raisins and i certainly do not want to mix that with cheese. yuck! but there is no doubt i respect the tradition and the culture. i do love jerk everything though. oh, and rice and peas, and sweet plantains. whoa. now that is good eats.

I need to eat something.

Diva, that sounds delicious. I'm hungry suddenly!

You know...I've never had hot cross buns. I've never had an overly-religious family, so we really never messed around with traditional celebrations. Well, aside from the commercialization of holidays like Christmas and Easter that I feel like a hypocrite for celebrating.

Existential Intellection From the Bible Belt

Our Diva HOW did I miss this post of yours?

I am VERY familiar with the tradition you posted about, although we don't follow it as religiously as in days of old. But let me tell you--I am CRAZY about Jamaican cheese, especially when it is melted. And I certainly don't mind it cold on a piece of bun filled with fat, juicy raisins. Ooh girl, you have me hungry now! Blast it, Diva, must you post about food to taunt me? You and that Catfish are incorrigible with this >:D!

Sounds very yummy!
