Duplicate Content- READ THIS

Just so everyone knows...

Duplicating content you see on another web page and posting it in your blog is ILLEGAL. You are violating the copyright of that other person. Even if you found it on another blog site...if you didn't write it you have absolutly NO right to publish it without the expressed consent of the author.

With things like news stories, many websites pay thousands of dollars for the privilage of posting articles written by the AP. Copying and posting these without paying the AP can land you in a whirlwind of trouble.

If you really like what someone had to say, and want to share it, do it with a link to the original.

Also by copying and posting you are also lowering yourself and the origninal author in search engine rankings (google doesnt like duplicate content). In fact, should google find a substantial amount of duplicate content on your site you can have your account BANNED for it...end of story.

SO-

DONT COPY OTHER PEOPLES WORK AND POST IT. EVEN IF YOU ATTRIBUTE IT TO THEM IT IS NOT YOURS TO POST WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT.

Question...

Not that I would do it myself, but is it illegal even if you totally give credit to the original author?

Hmmmmmmmm...?

Yes, it is illegal

Copying something you didn't write and publishing it, even if you give credit to the priginal author is VERY illegal, unless you have written consent from the original author.

This applies to other peoples blog entries, news articles, books...everything.

Some very old items may be in the "public domain" which means you could use them. this usually only applies to things written 70+ years ago, in many cases MUCH longer.

If you didn't write it...don't post it. End of story. One blogegr in particular on here has been literally copying other peoples blog entries and reposting them. This, is VERY illegal, and could result in the poster getting themselves or this website sued.

It is plagiarism

to reprint the work of another without their express permission UNLESS you reference the work following proper MLA-type guidelines. (Surely you didn't contact Hemingway for permission before quoting The Sun Also Rises in your college term paper?) Even so, this *may* violate individual terms of service for some blogs, discussion groups, or web services, so check first.

If there are concerns about "particular" bloggers here, it would seem more prudent to report this to Admin, though admittedly I don't know whether they police that sort of thing. I would also question the use of the term "duplication." Point of fact, this is not necessarily the same thing as plagiarism--several people here *legally* repost their OWN work from other blogs or sites. Before levelling any accusations you might want to ensure the offenders in question aren't actually duplicating work they've written themselves on another service--under a different user name, perhaps.

Just a thought.
