Don't be an awful clot - exercise regularly whether you are on a long haul air flight, stuck behind your desk at work, or even spending hours on your PC at home madly blogging.
You can get deep vein thrombosis( blood clot) at work, not just on long haul flights.
A Wellington, New Zealand, study has found that more people get blood clots from sitting down for long periods at work.
Researchers studied the risk factors of 62 people under the age of 65 years admitted to Wellington Hospital with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
One third of them had been seated for long periods at work in the previous four weeks, and only one in five had been on a long haul flight. There was some surprise at the length of time some workers had been sitting down. Some had worked in a desk job for up to 14 hours.
Some were seated for up to four or five hours at a time without getting up to move around. Managers, call centre workers and taxi drivers were among them.
Other factors such as cabin pressure had been implicated as contributing to the risks on flights.
Researchers did not know the proportion of people who had desk jobs compared with those who travelled. The public were well aware of the risk factor in long haul flights, but were less aware of the dangers of sitting at work for long periods.
Both passengers on long haul flights and office workers should move around regularly. The latter should stand and move around every thirty to sixty minutes or so.
The findings of the research will be presented to the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand's conference this month.
So don't be a clot - exercise fellow bloggers!
