Do you remember your first handmade Father's Day gift?

Anyone remember the first gift they ever made their Dad for Father's Day? I went to Catholic School and I remeber the nuns made us make ashtrays! I have such a vivid picture in my mind. The worst part was that the colors they gave us to paint them were all dark and drab colors. It looked like they had mixed all the colors together. It was a dark dingy purple, gray color.

What were they thinking? I remember KNITTING a head band (like a sweatband) and then I wanted him to waer it! UGHH! I know my Dad loves me, he put it on! My kids have some innovative teachers, thank God! They have come home with jelly jars that are purchased to make jams-full of popcorn. It had a little poem tied to it with raffia. My personal favorite is a poem that a teacher had printed up, cut in the shape of a tie, with their hand prints decorating the background. Their hands will never be that small again!!! That was a beautiful gift!

Did you ever wonder how and where the first Father's Day started? The first idea of Father's Day came from Sonora Dodd of Washington. She thought of the idea as she was listening to a sermon in 1909. She wanted to honor her father: a civil war vet and widow. His wife had died during the birth of their sixth child. He became a single parent raising all six children on a rural farm in Washington. She admired her father for his selflessness and dedication to his family. Her father was born in June. On the 19th of June, 1910 she held the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane Washington.

Father's Day is next month and there are many gifts that are given over and over again. Before you decide to go get yet another tie, think about this. Everyone has to eat. So why not give him the best variety of foods? Think gift basket. What about a gift basket filled with the finest chocolates, nuts, wines, cheeses and fruits? While this company provides pre-filled gift baskets they also offer you the chance to fill your own basket. You can create your own personalized Father’s Day gift baskets to give your father only what he loves. Sounds great? I think so. Now go take a look and see what I mean! You can laugh about those gifts that you made in school and show him how much you appreciated how he looked at the intention and not the gift!
