Dimetapp Can be the Devil

allergies | family life | preschoolers

My son has been diagnosed with allergies to pretty much everything in an average house (dust, mold, dogs, cats...). We've been trying to find the right combination of allergy meds to tame the itchy nose, red, watery eyes, and post nasal drip cough.

We've yet to find the right medicines, but we sure did find the wrong one. While he's taken Dimetapp Cough and Cold before, he had never taken it for several days in a row, nor in combination with Claritin (at the doctor's suggestion). Turns out that some antihistimes, like Dimetapp, can cause some children, like mine, to turn into raging maniacs.

After several days of use my just-turned-three-year-old was lobbing large plastic toys across the room. He was arguing semantics with me (after reprimanding him repeatedly for throwing toys - and making use of time out - he then threw the toys underhanded to a friend. I went over there to kill him and he said, "But I was TOSSING them Mama. Just TOSSING them." ARG!!!!), and generally being an ugly, contrary human being for whom our usual forms of punishment were pointless.

Thankfully, my mother remembered that Dimetapp turned me into some kind of a monster at his age too, which is how I knew to stop giving the meds rather than to have my son committed. Now I watch all medicines carefully, but I am noticing just an overall increase in obnoxious behavior as we try different things.

But he's also napping more often, so I'll take the good with the bad. Now if I could just get his nose to stop itching!
