Decency Has Left The Logical Teenaged Mind

Facebook | idiocy | logic | MySpace | online posting | pictures | teenagers

Either parents aren't teaching their children anything about common sense anymore, or the kids aren't listening, because they're growing up stupid.

This time, I'm referring to the news story about two Penn State students who went to a Halloween party dressed up as West Virginia students who were shot and killed earlier this year by that other nutball maniac. They put a bunch of holes through some of their clothes and added red dye to simulate blood.

Then, these morons thought they were so clever that they wanted to share it with the world, so they posted the pictures on their Facebook site, of all things. Facebook is what almost took down Miss New Jersey, when she posted pictures of herself having some pretty harmless fun and some nutjob felt it was their right to copy them and send them to the NJ Pageant officials. You'd have thought that even if these morons believed they had a right to post these pictures privately (which they didn't, by the way), that one of them would have remembered some recent news and thought twice about it (oh yeah, most young people don't watch the news, especially while in college).

In this particular instance, the university investigated, then realized they have no legal recourse against either of the students, so their sorry behinds have survived this bit of idiocy, though I'm sure people are looking at both of them sideways now. However, in kind of a related incident, we have a local story of an 18 year old who posted pictures of some girls naked on his MySpace account and has been arrested for posting underaged pornography. The rest of the story is that, when the pictures were taken, the girls were 16 and actually took the pictures of themselves to share with some of their male friends, which includes him because he was also 16 at the time, and the law pretty much doesn't care that he and the girls are now 18, the pictures were of 16 year old girls. Poor kid; bad miscalculation, but still utter stupidity. Who needs friends like that, eh?

So, what's going on here? Someone, please help these kids!

I've written on like this

a few days ago, but haven't posted it yet. I really don't know what's going on anymore! The trend is to degrade and humiliate! I don't get it! You know, there are actually websites out there that trick immigrants into having sex on camera with random men because they're told they will get a fricking green card or marriage by doing it!!! Then, when the deed is done they're humiliated on camera by being thrown out by the guys! All this is then put up online as entertainment! It's just sick!

I'm with you, Spooky,...

and it's just amazing how willing "we" are to use someone else's pain for our own amusement. In a way, that's what the Girls Gone Wild guy did to make his millions, though I still think the way they've been treating the guy in prison and the rest is a bit over the top.

I had a realization last night!

I let the evil one sit down and watch Hostel since she'd been good that day. Well, while watching it I began thinking of the premise behind it and how it's about this very conversation. That the world has become so desensitzed that we get our jollies from doing harm. But, worse was noticing my own reaction to some of the things in the movie! A big one is how down right giddy I get every single time I see Takashi Miike do his cameo! He's a Japanese horror director that I really love! (he directed one film from my "watch" list called Audition) He comes out of the building where the people are tortured and killed and is asked by a potential victim (who'd been told he was being taken to an art show!) "how is it in there?". Takashi replies with something very sinister and then smiles this creepy, evil smile! I laugh every time! But, this time after I did I thought how ~ even though I don't believe violence begets violence, that I am actually playing spectator to a fake version of what we all find horrifying! So, I have to ask myself ~ by watching movie violence with the kind of glee that I tend to ~ does that make me as bad as the freaks who watch the real life horror and humiliation?????

Something to think about, huh???

That's intriguing, Spooky,...

but I have to ask you about the "evil one", as I'm assuming that's your daughter, and her being allowed to watch such a movie. I remember the parents of this baby we used to watch, the child of which is now four years old, talking about the language their child uses sometimes, then admitting that they let him watch these R-rated movies with them because they don't feel like trying to keep him away, and didn't think they could affect him much at his age.

I have no kids, so it's hard for me to judge, but a big part of me just keeps believing it can't be a good thing to keep subjecting our children to these really very adult images of sex, violence, language, etc. I mean, children being inundated with this stuff, wouldn't one expect they're either going to emulate it or be desensitized by it, and is either one necessarily good for them?

I'm still of the age when my parents used to NOT let me watch certain things on TV because they didn't think I was old enough for it, and I really was 17 before I saw my first R-rated movie. Sure, things were different in the 70's than they are now, but I'm not sure some parts of it weren't better in some ways.

it's a tough balance, catfish

and one I've been asked about before. The thing is, I go to great lengths to teach the kids fantasy from reality. Not an easy task with a little one, but not impossible! But, really, it was after noticing that she was watching when I watched scary movies. Really, I didn't think she paid attention! And, she only will watch Hostel now since she's decided she doesn't like sacry movies anymore. When I rented Hostel 2 she wanted no part of it and I watched it while she was asleep.
As to if it's a good or bad thing ~ I believe that as long as the kid is being taught right from wrong and that I keep on top of what she comes away from a movie with, it's not such a big deal. Hell, I was taken to horror movies by my parents when I was her age. I was even allowed to stay up late every friday and saturday night to watch B horror movies with my dad and Saturday Night Live!

Movies, video games...

many of these kids just lack common sense - they dont comprehend - have they been taught? Has it sunken through to them? North Americans, British, Aussies, Kiwis, it doesn't matter. Just kids!

Kids, Hutts,...

and parenting to a degree. I mean, we were kids also, but many of us didn't get away with the types of things kids get away with today. At the same time, though, many parents today aren't letting their kids out of their sight to explore and learn things on their own, out of fear for their safety, so maybe that's a double edged sword.

Actually Catfish kids brains

Sassys

don't stop growing until they are about 17 years old. 20/20 did a show on the actual hearing from kids in their early teens and it was amazing what they discovered...they put a bunch of different teens in a room and one by one they pulled them out to ask them a simple question like "Could you please shut the door?" Now the teens would all do the same thing when they returned to the room with their peers they would repeat what they had been quietly and decently asked into "She screamed at me and told me to close the damn door!" That is what they discovered with all knids of conversations with these kids...the kids brains heard what was said differently than what was actually said. So do I believe teens are stupid? Nah, they just are an unknown, strange species until they turn 30 years old:)

Funny and intriguing, Sassys,...

funny because it seems absolutely correct, but intriguing because, if that's the case, then around 18 years old is the first time they're actually acting with their real brains. And, seeing some of the stupidity that comes out of the average college student, whose at least 18, that's both intriguing and scary. And they easily got it from somewhere.
