DeBarge "I Like It"

In the early '70s, Motown Records scored a major success with The Jackson Five. In the '80s, the label tried to dupicate that success with another family act hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan - DeBarge. Consisting of four brothers and a sister, DeBarge formed in 1978 and released their debut album in 1981 to little fanfare.

It appeared that their sophomore effort titled All This Love was headed for a similar fate when the initial single, "Stop! Don't Tease Me" stalled at #46 on the R&B charts, failing to even crack the pop charts. However, the group landed their breakthrough with the follow-up "I Like It." The silky smooth, mid-tempo track with lush harmonies by the siblings clicked at both pop and R&B radio, entering both charts in March of 1983. It proved to be a major smash on the R&B charts, preaking at #2, and, although it didn't do quite as well on the pop charts, it still climbed into the US Top 40 and reaching #31.

A third single, the album's title track, would also do well and propel the album into the Top 30 and toward gold-selling status. The group would maintain the momentum with thei next album, In A Special Way released later in 1983 and have their greatest success two years later with the album and single "Rhythm Of The Night."
