Dear You Guys

Lost Art | writing

(1)
My mother was a master letter writer and I have very fond memories of her in upstate NY years ago, writing letters to my sisters still living in Spain at that time.

One letter could take up to two weeks to write, and they looked like manuscripts sometimes, they were that long. I used to read them whenever I got the chance and they were always packed with family matters and current events as well as politics. Without fail these letters were witty, and well written, with the pages numbered on top.

She not only informed, but every single letter she wrote had a large chunk of her personality as well. She would say things like "I never know what to tell Sassys NOT to do, like take her kid sister to a total strangers funeral, or not to jump in that well"

I still love it when I find an old letter of my mothers as it always takes me back to her ritual of late evening scotch and soda with pen and paper, listening to Mozart or Scott Joplin, reading bits of her letters out loud to me to agree or laugh or cry with her.

My mother was a vivacious Irish redhead. She was wild with her temper and equally giving of her love. She was also a very gifted classical pianist and right before she met my father was asked to join several famous orchestras...then m6y father totally screwed that up! UGH MEN! Anyhoo, she and my uncle Joe would have these battle royals via letters.
They both envied each others abilities...she read music and he played Jazz by ear. But the battles they had were always over religion...he was a devout Catholic, while she was less than devout. But no matter what, they respected each others well read intelligence.

I miss getting real mail! I miss writing letters myself, and was always lousy at writing letters back, but loved nothing better then getting a letter that's ten pages long knowing it will be packed with all kinds of gossip and stuff even secrets!
E-mails are too immediate for me, and blogging is not quite as personal. Nothing beats a nice long funny letter from a friend or loved one. And getting a love letter is way cool!!
I don't think one can really get a love e-mail, ya know?

Maybe I should start writing letters again, only problem is when I get a response then I must write back and if I do then the other person has to write me back....HEY this could catch on!!

Well gotta go...I have places to go and people to be:)
Stay sweet.
XOXOXOXOXOXO Sassys.

P.S I wrote this blog last week, will try to catch you up later. Byeeeeee!

Letter writing....pencils.........

You know those stupid, yet funny questions asked on 'Inside the Actor's Studio'? Well, every time he asks "what's your favorite sound?" The answer that's always sprung to my mind first in the sound of pencil to paper! Even the feel of it...it's something I just can't describe! I haven't gotten a letter in years....and, I miss them. My sister and I talked about having email to keep us connected now that I'm gone, but I might just write her letters instead.

Good point, Spooky,...

in the days before everyone had computers, I first wrote, then started typing, all my letters, and I was the one person who reached out to everyone to make sure I kept in constant contact with them. I was also the one who made most of the phone calls. Nowadays, I'm still the one who reaches out more often than everyone else, but through email, which is much easier. However, the letters are much shorter because I know most people won't read them, though they do seem to like my long, short stories on some of my travels. They all love when I either get lost or do something stupid that my sometimes naivety leads me to. Oh well,...

I love this story, Sassys,...

parts of it remind me of my Dad, who used to have his Friday night ritual of a fifth of bourbon, sitting down with his boots, shoe polish, a little bit of water and a rag, and shining all his boots for the following week (military man, you know). After shining, then we'd play either Dominos or Cribbage; at least while we were still living in Maine. Years later, I would be going out on Friday nights, but he was retired so the shoe shining ritual was over. Man, there are times when I miss that.

whenever it rains I think of my mother and I was sitting on my little porch listening to Mozart and it was raining and I just started writing this blog...I do miss her. Your dad sounds like a nice fellow...hell he had to have been great, just look at his son:)

I am one of those "manuscript" letter writers

I always have been. I mean it is like getting a book from me. I always was the one in my family to be the "keep in contact person", with the extended family. We all lived in varoius states. So when I wrote letters, (when I wrote one, I wrote several)I had to detail everything, and tell everything that was going on with everyone. I tend to want to type and email the same way.
I still write letters, every now and then and I love getting them in the mail. It is a change from the everyday bills that we get. It is slowly becoming a lost art.

LOL Now for some reason Ammorton

Sassys

I kind of pictured you as the letter writing type...good for you..and even better for your friends and loved ones...do you still write letters?

ammorton's picture

as much as I would like to say

"yes, all the time", I only do it a couple of times a year. Like with christmas cards and such. But when I do, it's a book. I like doing it also. I like the instant gratification like everybody else, but I still like putting the old pen to paper too.

I wish Ammorton that

Sassys

I could be even that disciplined myself! I still need to get a card for a dear friend that sent me some beautiful towels as a house warming gift, and I plan on doing so one minute then the very next I forget:(

Wow, Sassys, this really takes me back.

I was always a sporadic letter writer and even today I'm sporadic on my e-mails. But when I do write one - letter or e-mail - they are always epics. I can't seem to write just a quick note.

But I'm hooked on e-mail now. You know, I get so little instant gratification (or even delayed gratification) - e-mail is one of the few things I can count on in that arena. LOL!!!

Well I too am sporadic PW

Sassys

only I am sporadic with paying my bills on time:)

I am not quite as hooked on the e-mail just yet...I can go for days without reading them and then when I do read them I have to sift through hundreds of crappy ads:(
