My grandma used to say, "There is no use for the grass if the horse is dead." --- that means that there are things in life that do come too late. I recall she said this when she was about 82 years old and another aunt told her " We just bought the nicest mausoleum in one of the most expensive memorial parks in the city!". The family news didn't impress her. It made her smirk and say."There is no use for the grass if the horse is dead". Furthurmore, she asked me to swear that if she should die I MUST dare not visit her grave lest her spirit would be "bothered" by those who are still living without a roof while her rotting body is laid in a marble mausoleum.
My grandma was always a pragmatist. She would smirk at those food offerings for the dead every All Saint's Day and tell me. " That's a disgrace to God and to the living! The dead do not eat!"
Somehow, she has a point. It has taught me not to withold any good I can do for ANYONE if it is in my immediate capability to do so. It also has reminded me that NOW is what matters most, and if there is any GOOD thing or something we must do that we plan for tomorrow, we may as well do it today.Because - tomorrow, the horse may be dead.
