Dan Fogelberg "Run For The Roses"

Pop Go The 80s's picture

From 1975, when he scored his first solo Top 40 hit with "Part Of The Plan" through the end of 1980, Folk/rock singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg notched half a dozen hits that had made him a household name with soft rock and adult contemporary fans. With the 1981 release of his double album The Innocent Age, Fogelberg found the greatest success of his career.

The album sold better than two million copies and spun off four Top 40 pop hits, the final one being "Run For The Roses." Following the Top Ten hit "Leader Of The Band," "Run For The Roses" was another soft rock smash, built around the subject of horse racing - specifically, the annual Kentucky Derby.

Timed to take advantage of the Derby's May running, "Run For The Roses" was released in April of 1982 and galloped up the charts, cracking the US Top 40 at the end of April. The gentle, country-tinged song evoked images of bluegrass and open pastures, becoming one of the singer's most beloved records. It lost steam on the pop charts at #18, but, on the adult contemporary charts, the song made a show at #3.
