Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s drivers experienced six races that engine problems caused the race cars to not finish races. Four-to-five-hundred mile races with the engines revving to 9,500 RPM in track temperatures of 120 degrees require the engines to deliver maximum power under the most stressful conditions. (Very high RPMs combined with excessive heat.)

NASCAR specifications require 358 cubic-inch pushrod engines. They are to able to be purchased by the public at any NASCAR manufacturer's dealership parts department. The idea behind this regulation is to make the same basic equipment available to all the racing teams so that they are all competitive.

When the practice and qualifying days at the Daytona International Speedway arrive all the team's engines have been disassembled, parts reworked, then reassembled and evaluated on dynamometers in preparation for the Daytona 500

NASCARS premiere race of the season.
