Could You Get Fired Because of MySpace?

horny | jobs | MySpace | politics | professionalism | publicity | rob smoke | stoned

Anyone and everyone with a MySpace account knows that there is a lot of pressure to make one's profile 'hip'. This often translates to flippant comments, controversial opinions, sexualized dialogue and photos, and even gross unprofessionalism.

Now, U.S. public officials are even getting sucked into MySpace, and they aren't all behaving the way the public, and their superiors, would expect. Rob Smoke, the Boulder, Colorado Human-Relations Chairman, has not been portraying himself, or his job, in a professional manner.

He made several jokes about his job, talked about getting "stoned" and about being "horny" and even linked from his profile to his professional website.

Officials discussed firing him, although for the time being his job is 'safe'.

On the upside for Rob Smoke, he is gaining supporters on MySpace, likely tapping into a market that few or no other public officials have. How better to reach people who are young, horny, maybe stoned? Of course, at the moment, he only has 51 friends, but I'm sure all that will change. His crudeness has reached not only MySpacers, but has brought him media attention too!

We have a constitutional

We have a constitutional right to say and write whatever we want even if it is unprofessional. That said people lose their jobs all the time for “running their mouth. In today's workplace constitutional rights take a back seat to company profits.
