The Tool of The Corrupt
Lies. Defined by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as:
an assertion of something known or believed by the speaker to be untrue with intent to deceive
Propaganda. Defined by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as:
the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
Combine the two and you have the most powerful tool a corrupt group can bring to bear on the ususpecting.
In this country, the U.S.A., there are plenty of unsuspecting. People who trust what the pretty people on television tell them. People who believe that, if a program calls itself The News, that program must contain absolute fact. People who believe that, if a cable network calls itself a News Network, that network must, by very definition, present nothing but facts in all its programming. And people who believe that, if a publication calls itself a Newspaper, that publication must, indeed, present the truth and nothing but the truth.
And yet, these very institutions - the news programs, the news networks and the newspapers - have become nothing but tools for big business to control and exploit the American public while reaping unbelievable wealth. And corrupt politicians, who have no purpose other than to further their personal agendas, no thought for serving the people who elected them and trust them to work for the betterment of their constituents, have also become the tools of big business.
Lies are told to make it possible for one political party to gain control of the political process. More lies are told to keep corrupt politicians in office so that big business can continue cheating and victimizing the American public.
Wages, health insurance, gun control, military spending, religion, racial and sexual bigotry are the standard fare of these liars and propagandists. They tell stories that inspire fear and hatred. And they work. Oh yes, they work.
The unsuspecting American public, the people who grew up believing that their politicians and their news programs and their newspapers would tell them the truth, listen to those lies and they believe. They believe that they will lose their jobs if they demand better wages and benefits. They believe that the Democrats want to take away their guns. Or they believe that everyone who owns a gun is a rabid nutjob who is wielding that gun with a blood lust that threatens the very fabric of our society.
They believe that the current President wants to euthanise old people so that he can reduce Social Security and Medicare spending to balance his budget. They believe that people will die waiting in line to see a doctor if the government offers a public option. They believe that people in Canada are dying for lack of medical care due to their socialized medicine and they believe that the offering of a public option by the U.S. government will mean socialized medicine in the U.S.
But they believe much more sinister lies. They believe that a conspiracy exists that has made it possible for someone who is not a citizen of this country to become President. They believe that gay people have the power to turn their children gay and, what's more, they believe that gay people want to turn their children gay.
They believe that people who are not white are dangerous. They believe that people who do not worship Jesus must necessarily worship evil.
Why do they believe this? They believe it because a pretty face on the television told them so. They believe because a white man with an educated voice and a commanding personality told them it was true. They believe because they have been taught since birth that educated, commanding white people always tell the truth.
They will believe the lies even as they read the notice from the insurance company telling them that their medical claims have been denied because they have reached their lifetime limit - something the insurance company never bothered to tell them while they were making all those monthly premium payments. They will believe the lies when their wages are cut or their jobs sent overseas. They will believe those lies even when legislation that has stripped the rights from one segment of the population is used to strip away their own rights.
They will still believe.

allowing their own kids to go to war and die for a big fat lie...and after the child dies they absolutely have to continue to believe, because it's far to painful to think they died in vain...all of this is true PW and as per your usual succinct way of putting it, even the likes of BlueHaven will find it hard to dispute! Lately, I've been very discouraged. I don't believe that we can pull our political system out of the sewer it has become - at least, not in my lifetime. It will take education and even that won't have any effect on the people who are now past college age. We have to start with the young ones. In my opinion, the only chance the U.S. has is to reform our educational system and raise a new generation of adequately educated people (as opposed to the hideously inadequately educated people we are now churning out of our school systems).
Well here is some hope PW
Obama is TRYING to make it impossible for the "teacher wannabes" to get a hold of our kids...he is making it mandatory that our educators are themselves educated. I agree we do have a long way to go. Stupid people do not see themselves as stupid so they beget stupid kids and it goes on and on. I know the Chinese have a rule that families can only have two kids...at least they used to have that law, and I personally believe that stupid people should not be allowed to procreate at all.
If only we could institute a test for would-be
parents (and congressional candidates, but that's another story). Seriously, there are so many people who are too stupid to actually take care of themselves and they are popping out kids right & left.
**sigh** Naturally, it'll never happen. But maybe, someday soon, we can get those stupid kids away from their stupid parents for enough hours in the year to unstoopid them a little.
But by then you may have another problem..

Religion of one kind or another will always have an influence
on people - no matter where they are. I'm not any more worried about Islam than I am about Christianity - they are just 2 sides of the same coin.

Religion isn't a bad thing...it is people who make it bad....corrupt.....vile.....to the point that there are still people in this world who believe it is God's will to cut off the head of those who don't believe how you believe......(at least Christians quit burning people three centuries ago)......now....they just vent prejudice and hate towards those who they perceive are different.
Lies fill the earth.....they are the lies of men who crave power and who lust after control of the masses who want to relinquish their responsibility to themselves and to their friends and family.
Lies control the earth because men (humans) allow them to. The lies are allowed because someone has something to gain from them.
The lie about Obama's birth certificate is a stupid and ridiculous attempt to overthrow our elected president. The issue was solved in 1964 when Barry Goldwater, a republican, ran for president. Yes, he was born in Arizona, but Arizona was not yet a state and he was therefore not born on American soil. A bunch of smart constitutional lawyers got together and decided Goldwater could run because his mother and father were born on American soil. It only takes one parent. So, even if Obama was born in Kenya....he is still our president because his mother was born in Kansas.

I find myself more and more despondent - even the anger is leaving me - because of the lies fed to people who just don't realize they are being lied to. Otherwise good and decent people who have been fed lies and hatred until they no longer own their own souls.
It's true, people who buy into hatred must take responsibility for their own behavior. But it's often very hard when the people you trust implicitly use that trust against you.
I love your information about the Goldwater issue. I was in the 5th grade when he ran and I remember our teacher, Mr. Goode (I swear), talking to us about it. It kind of hit home with me because my brother was very nearly born in Hawaii before it was made a state. My father's transfer papers came through just 2 months before he was born and, as a result, my mother and I went back to the mainland on a Navy ship. My mother still talks about that trip. She loved it and never wanted to dock.
Any-ole-who, another side - and, I believe the driving force - to the Obama birthers is racism. This entire birth certificate issue was drummed up because there are people who just can't accept the fact that a Black man is President. More hatred fed by more corrupt men. It's enough to make me want to go live in a cave in the mountains.
Who are they PW? The media?
Who are they PW? The media? Politicians? Christians? The unsuspecting American public is comprised of all of these and more. Determing the good guy from the bad isn't an easy task and one could die thinking he or she were on the right side. Clearly, to live and learn is our only recourse and to remember there is always two sides to a coin.

has the truth on ANY of it's sides would this comment even makes sense. But personally I would take all three, the Media, the Politicians, and especially the "Christians" and tell them all where to shove it and why they need to shove it sooner than later! One need not try to determine good from bad...all one needs to determine is who is lying.
Some things I agree, and others I do not
Politicians are corrupt..they all are. They do not look at what's important to the American people. They want to bankrupt this economy, by stimulus packages, stimulus money that went to Alaska, for instance, to fund all these little airports in these obscure little villages. Outrageous amounts, that could be better spent in bigger cities!
What people do not seem to realize..that Congress has the ultimate power in this country..it seems like the office of the presidency is just for show, nowadays. Our unfortunate President, who wished to keep his campaign promises, is being bombarded by his own appointed folks, who seem to have their own agendas, regardless of how the Pres feels about it (like our illustrious Sec of the Treasury). It seems that no one is on the right page in the White House at the moment.I honestly did not vote for the Pres, but I do respect the man, because he has the hardest job in the world, and he is our Pres. If God didn't want him there, he wouldn't be there...that's what I think.

I do believe that there are a few politicians that are not totally corrupt but I also know that everyone has their own agenda - everyone. That's not really a problem except that there are so many whose agendas are truly corrupt. They really do feel that the vast majority of the American public should be grateful for crumbs dropped from the tables of their "betters". And by "betters" I mean the ones with all the money.
I have decided to take the long view on our current political situation. I read a great article some time ago about Obama being a chess player. He bides his time, he sacrifices a few pieces here and there, but eventually his strategy will lead to a big win for the American people. Of course, this is all predicated on my belief that Obama's strategy is really intended to help the American people and that his plan is the best plan for getting the country back on its feet, both ethically and financially. And I do believe that. But I've been fooled before.
So, I intend to keep pinging at my Congressmen and making as much noise as I can about the things I want to happen. I'm not sure if I really believe that that will make a difference but I absolutely do not intend to go quietly. LOL!!!
