Charlie Dore "Pilot Of The Airwaves"

There's something reminscent of the California style pop/rock of the late '70s in the one-hit wonder song "Pilot Of The Airwaves" by Charlie Dore. So, it's a bit surprising to know that Dore was from the UK and had recorded the song and her debut album, Where To Now?, in Nashville. And what's more, Dore was studying drama in London when she was discovered by legendary Island Records guru Chris Blackwell singing in her side project, a band called Charlie Dore's Back Pocket.

It all turned out well, though, as the breezy "PIlot Of The Airwaves" climbed to #13 in April of 1980. It would be her only hit, making the title of the song's parent album, Where To Now, a good question. Where to turned out to be back to acting fllowing a second album that produced no hits.

There was also more music in Dore's future as she went on to write songs for other artists inlcuding Barry Manilow, Lisa Stansfield, Celine Dion, and Sheena Easton, who took the Dore-penned "Strut" into the Top Ten in late 1984. She would also return to performing, including garnering some interest for a dance mix of her song "Time Goes By" in 1995, but a follow-up to "Pilot Of The Airwaves" hasn't happened yet.
