Let me tell you a little about my favorite charity. Heifer International is an organization that accepts charitable donations and purchases animals. These animals are then sent to a part of the world that is suffering from hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. When a family is given the animals, they are also taught how to care for them.

I gave my best friend a donation of a flock of chicks this year for Christmas. One flock of chicks will be sent somewhere. They will be taught to care for them. Their diet will improve from the protein in the eggs and meat, and when those chicks hatch their own chicks, they are told to share the chicks with another family. Also, the eggs or chickens can be sold to create an income for a family. $20 buys a flock of chicks that sets in motion a chain of events that could save a life, family, region, or world.

There are more animals too. There are sheep, cows, and geese, trees, and even honeybees. Did you know that honeybees can double a harvest because they polinate the flowers. This helps the entire village. They can also use the honey and wax.

I was given many wonderful presents this year. I can eat some chocolates while drinking wine and lounging in a nice white tea bath. And not a one of these things will change the world. When I say that I am hungry, I mean that I have made it from 8am to noon without a single bite of food. But that isn't hunger. I'd say that most of us sitting in front of our computers are in the same situation. This is not to guilt you into donating to them, but a reminder that a pocketbook feeling a little light is not the same as poverty.

Give a little something. Somehow, somewhere, the universe will pay back your small act of charity.
