According to a web release by http://www.carinsurance.com GEICO has advised car owners in California to pay attention to the National Insurance Crime Bureau's (NICB) latest report. The report claims California contains six of the top 10 car theft locations in America. I’d imagine that would be quite alarming for Californian car owners. But feel free to check out the sources before panic ensues. As Tom Waits says “substantiate the rumours that you heard.

Nancy Pierce, regional vice president of GEICO's San Diego location comments that increasingly her role involves attempting to protect customers from fraud and thief.
She provides 11 ways to help prevent car jacking in the web release.

  1. Keep vehicle locked at all times.
  2. Never leave your keys in the car.
  3. Park in well lit, populated or busy areas.
  4. Don't leave valuables inside your vehicle.
  5. Fit an anti-theft system in your vehicle.
  6. Some insurers offer discounts for these types of systems.
  7. Be aware of the "bump-and-rob" technique. Carjackers may bump your car from the rear, then steal it when you get out to look for damage. Leave room when stopping at lights to turn round and remove yourself from the area if you feel threatned. Call the police for assistance if necessary.
  8. Do not leave registration or title in the car.
  9. Note your surroundings, especially in garages, parking lots and gas stations.
  10. Before you head off on a journey know where you are going. Avoid known high-crime areas even if the alternate route takes a little longer.
  11. If confronted by a carjacker, do not resist. Cars can be replaced; you can't.
  12. Have your car's vehicle identification number (VIN) etched on each of the windows.
