According to The New York Times and
this article by Cecile Richards on the Huffington Post , the Bush Administration is set to put in place a new rule for clinics, hospitals, medical schools, etc. that receive federal aid, that will require them to hire employees who will refuse to dispense or prescribe certain birth control methods and who will refuse to perform abortions, for whatever reason, because of their religious beliefs.
No, this rule will not mean that these medical institutions will have to go out and look for someone who is against birth control and abortions. But they will have to certify that they will not refuse to hire someone who will refuse to perform these procedures or dispense these medications.
And there are plenty of people in the medical profession out there that will refuse a rape victim emergency contraception to prevent a pregnancy from the rape – plenty. There are plenty of doctors and pharmacists who will refuse to prescribe or dispense any kind of contraception, for any reason.
The New York Times article stated, The proposal, which circulated in the department on Monday, says the new requirement is needed to ensure that federal money does not “support morally coercive or discriminatory practices or policies in violation of federal law.”
Morally Coercive??? What the hell is morally coercive about allowing a woman the right to decide whether or not she wants to bear a child?
Here’s what I think; the Bush Administration wants to enable certain members of the medical profession to force their moral codes on the public. They want certain members of the medical profession to be judge and jury in regulating the ethical standards for women. This is just one more step in the attempts of the Bush Administration to force the moral and ethical standards of the extreme religious right onto the rest of the American public.
But you judge for yourself. Read these articles, make up your own mind. And if you think the Bush Administration is trying, once again, to throw more of our rights out the window, CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN!!! Don’t let them get away with this, AGAIN!
