Boo Hoo to the "Civil Libertarians"

civil liberty

Just a few days ago the local police used a new strategy - trained sniffer dogs were taken to the local teenage hotspots and night club area, and as patrons lined up to enter, the sniffer dogs walked along and singled out those who had drugs.

Over 20 young people who had drugs of all sorts on their person were taken away to the City Watchhouse and were charged with a range of drug offences.

The newspaper heralded the success of the exercise - along with the wailings of the civil libertarians who proclaimed that it was a disgrace that people, the majority of whom were innocent were subject to sniffing by the dogs. How embarrassing!

What rot! I'm sick of these do gooders being on the side of the criminal element as if the victims of crime were the guilty party. I don't think anyone attending the night clubs was offended by the exercise - really the dogs just walked past the line up of people, and only when he/she sniffed the booty did he/she pounce and "embarrass" the guilty party. They had the stuff stashed in their pockets or handbags - easy detective work. Mate, you're gone.

Keep it up, I say to our law enforcement officers. The world will be much safer without this criminal element, and without the drugs.

There should be more of it.

I saw a county sheriff SUV ...

... sitting a block away from a popular local tavern, well hidden, to nail people coming out who get into their cars. Makes a person want to never to a bar ever again under any cirumstances.

The point is........

that if one is not breaking the law they should have nothing to fear. I'm all for catching the "bad guys."

What victims?

You wrote: "I'm sick of these do gooders being on the side of the criminal element as if the victims of crime were the guilty party."

Where, exactly are the victims here? If a person chooses to take drugs how does that harm you (or anyone else) in any way shape or form? There ar eno victims. This is just another example of the police hassling people for no good reason.

I suppose you'll be just fine when the police walk into your house without a warrant.

Actually, you could ask,...

this same question the other way. As in, if the dogs walked by those who didn't have drugs, how are they victims? The problem isn't necessarily how drugs might affect someone who doesn't use them, although it's a valid enough question that can be answered in many ways. For instance, most of those who sell drugs are dangerous people who live on the edge, and one buying drugs from them is in immediate danger every time. Also, once people really start getting addicted, they'll commit all sorts of atrocities to get the money to buy more drugs. And, of course, both of those harm other people. But the big thing is that it's illegal, plain and simple, and if people want to do drugs, they should stay home and do them, instead of being stupid and bringing them out with them. Then again, there's another reason it's known as dope.

But it's not me bringing

But it's not me bringing victims into this equation. It's Tottie. As I said in my original comment there are no victims in this story.

The crimes you assert were not being committed in this article. And they wouldn't be happening at all if we'd just give up on prohibition. It didn't work with alcohol and it's not working with drugs.

Violent crimes should be prosecuted. Property crimes (such as theft) should be prosecuted. Both have victims. There were no victims in this story.

As for your "its illegal plain and simple" argument, well I guess there's no point in debating against the ultimate wisdom of the all knowing government then. Of course, when you stop questioning your government you're simply accepting slavery. But if you're comfortable in it, who am I to argue?

I, for one, miss the freedoms this country was founded on.
