Baseball | commentary | editorial | home run | Steroids
Much debate has been made over Major League Baseball’s decision to not formally celebrate Barry Bonds surpassing of Babe Ruth’s career home run mark of 714, which at one time was the single most important number in all of professional sports.
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig stated that the game has never celebrated someone moving into second place on any record list. But it is hard to imagine why baseball would not take the opportunity to turn back the clock and celebrate the mighty Ruth’s legend. After all, Ruth is an icon of the game and fans still recognize the Bambino as the greatest player in the history of baseball.

Arizona | football | Matt Leinart | NFL | NFL Draft | Trojans | USC
After the 2004 college football season, USC quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart could have forgone his senior season and cashed in. He would have been the No. 1 pick in last year’s NFL Draft and selected by the San Francisco 49ers. However, Leinart took the road less traveled and decided to enjoy another year of college life as the ‘Big Man on Campus.’
Due to his decision to stay in school, Leinart’s stock dropped. Many NFL executives had second thoughts before this year’s draft regarding his drive, arm strength and attitude. As a result, Leinart was selected 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals. The Buffalo Bills passed on Leinart and used their pick at No. 8 to focus on defense, as did the Detroit Lions at No. 9. Buffalo’s combined 400 year old executive board made it public that they didn’t want a ‘Hollywood attitude’ on their team.

Burger King | NCAA Basketabll Tournament | television commericals
There is nothing more annoying than a television commerical that is not only stupid, but very, very annoying. The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has way to many television breaks and apparently this year only three companies paid big bucks to have their commericals run repeatedly throughout the entire tournament: 1) Burger King's buckin' chicken 2) Applebee's idiotic Gilligan's Island themed shrimptastrophe 3) Duke's Mike Krzyzewski Chevy March Madness (which is a cheap recruiting ploy).

College Football | march madness | NCAA Basketball | NCAA Football
After a full weekend of upsets and buzzer beaters, the NCAA Basketball Tournament once again has proven to be the best college sporting event on this planet. March Madness is truly a dream come true for many sports fans. In just four days, the NCAA bracket dwindles from the field of 64 to the Sweet 16, and with plenty of raw emotion and drama along the way.
However, every year I watch the madness unfold and I begin to wonder why the NCAA does not capitalize on the success of their basketball tournament and implement a similar playoff in Division I college football.

There is a reason why eight Big East Conference teams were invited to this year’s NCAA Tournament…the best basketball in the country is played in the Big East. So it should be no surprise when this year’s tourney is dominated by several Big East teams.
The Sports Mouth followed this philosophy when submitting his bracket in the great ESPN Tournament Challenge. I have five Big East teams; UConn, West Virginia, Syracuse, Villanova, and Georgetown advancing to the Sweet 16. Also, the Big East represents 50% of my Final Four with UConn and Villanova advancing.

College Basketball | march madness | NCAA Tournament
If you answered yes, good luck telling your sob story to any fan of one of these 40+ plus schools who have never, ever, not even once experienced what it feels like to root on their beloved team at the mecca of collegiate basketball. They’ve never been to the ‘big dance.’
Most of the schools who have not earned a trip to the tourney are the smaller, lower tiered conference colleges and university’s which have not been at the Division I level for very long. However, there a few programs from the so-called ‘power conferences’ who have never received the coveted invitation as well.

march madness | NCAA Basketball Tournament
Are you sick and tired of losing your office pool? Do you consistently pick the wrong teams to advance to the Sweet Sixteen? So do I, but this year can be different. This year we are going to be smart. We are going to research, put bias aside and have a bracket that everyone at the office will envy.
So, are you ready to finally do fill out an NCAA Tournament bracket the right way?
This year, instead of going on hunches and gut instincts, there are just nine things to consider with every team you select. This probably will not help me or you win the grand prize of the ESPN Tournament Challenge, but maybe this year we can capture that office pool championship and have something to be proud of.

Baseball | Kirby Puckett | Minnesota Twins
Yesterday, I cried. There have only been a handful of times when the passing of a great athlete has brought me to tears and yesterday was one of those times. Kirby Puckett, a 10-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion and Baseball Hall of Famer, died yesterday in Arizona due to complications after a severe stroke. He was just 45 years old.
I have never been a fan of the Minnesota Twins, but you didn’t have to be in order to be a fan of Kirby Puckett. He was easy to like, he hustled, worked hard, played with great enthusiasm and had one of baseball’s greatest personalities…and was one of the most dominant players of his era.

football | NFL | NFL Free Agency
With all the NFL talk focused on the recent combine and upcoming draft, football fans should also be paying close attention to the upcoming free agent market that officially begins on Friday, March 3. Several big names in the NFL could become available, at a steep price, if they are not secured by their current team.

As a Wyoming native, it is hard to express how saddened I was to learn yesterday that Curt Gowdy had passed. He will be remembered as a legendary sportscaster to many, as he is the only broadcaster to be inducted into the baseball, basketball and football halls of fame. But to those who grew up in the great state of Wyoming, we only know Gowdy as a ‘hometown hero’ and he will always be remembered as one of the state’s most respected ambassador’s.

Dear Barry,
I read this morning that you think you might not play baseball next year. I can’t tell how great this news is to me. I am a huge baseball fan and would love to see the game move in a positive direction. Thank you for making my Monday better than it usually is.

By re-signing quarterback Kurt Warner to a three-year deal, the Arizona Cardinals have finally put money where there big mouths have been. For many years fans of the dismal franchise have sat back waiting for the Bidwill Family (franchise owners) to invest in a winning team. After years and years of disappointment, fans can finally attest to witnessing the Cardinals make a good decision. Instead of letting Warner go and signing another free-agent quarterback, and saving a few million bucks, the Bidwill’s decided to hang on to a player who has experience winning football games…something the Cardinals have limited knowledge of since moving to the desert in 1988.

When a college basketball fan thinks about the NCAA Tournament some of the most legendary basketball schools come to mind. The traditional basketball powerhouses like Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana and the modern-day dominance of programs like Arizona, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, Stanford, and Syracuse are the iconic symbols of tournament. What would March Madness be without them?

It’s over, put your tailgates up and throw away your foam fingers. Football season is long gone and there is nothing you can do about it. Sure the Arena Football League has started play, but who actually watches that crap. It’s time to slip into the deep off-season depression that is FWS or better known as Football Withdrawal Syndrome.
But wait! There is something to look forward to. Yes, how could this slip past me? The NFL Draft, thank the Football Gods for this annual event. The 2006 version could be one of the most anticipated drafts in NFL history especially with the potential greatness the top four players available in this year’s edition: USC running back Reggie Bush, USC quarterback Matt Leinart, Texas quarterback Vince Young and Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler.
