Pass The Carbon Monoxide, Please

What you see is not necessarily what you are eating, when it comes to meat. When you choose a package of meat at the grocery store, what are you looking for? Most of us, pick that nice, fresh, pink-colored one. We usually will pass by that one that is looking rather dark, or maybe slightly gray or brown. Turns out, they may be the same meat, cut and wrapped at the same time, only one has been tampered with.

Don't Drop Strays Off

We have a new cat at our house. As we live in the country, we too often get strays here. For some reason, people think that they can drop their unwanted animals off out in the country, and the country people will take care of them. That might happen occasionally....like this time. It happens that we have lost two old cats in the last year, so we have room for another one.

This one came into our shed and was huddled behind a heat box that we have over the pump to keep it from freezing. My son went out and enticed it to come out, with promises of being fed, of course. It turned out to be friendly and seems healthy. So, we will keep this one.

Being Used For a Lab Rat...Ummm Person

Here we go again. You may have heard that the medical community is debating the necessity of many women with breast cancer being treated with chemotherapy.

For many years, cancer therapy for women with breast cancer has included chemo, but now, new studies are changing the long-held belief that the chemo is a necessity to the treatment. The new guidelines would include chemo for women whose cancer is not estrogen related, but other women could skip that treatment.

Fat or Not to Fat?

So its safe to go back to eating fat again? According to the latest "conclusive" study, older women can gobble down on the fat.....it won't affect whether or not they will get heart disease. But wait, isn't most heart disease caused by clogged (with fat) arteries?

Can you believe these people? Again they have switched gears in the middle of the stream. How many times do we listen to "the last word", "the latest findings", "verifiable evidence", only to have this prime info reversed a couple of years later? I don't listen to any of them any more. You can't trust what they say.

Fakes and Fakers

The Fakes of the world arise! There are now enough of you to start your own union...or maybe take over the world. From large corporations faking their balance sheets to confound investors to fake furs, fake orgasms and James Frey faking the "facts" in his bestseller, fakes are muddying the waters in the pond. Most of us don't know the counterfeit from the genuine. And the pace of modern life makes it nearly impossible to slow down long enough to figure it out.

Be Careful With That Hair Gel

There is a saying, "You learn something new everyday." Well, it happened to me today. My 15-year-old son's friend "cracked" his neck....while applying hair mousse! Has anyone ever heard of this? My first reaction was to laugh out loud....a reaction that was shared by many others.

He was taken to the doctor, whio worked on his neck and put a brace on it. The doctor said that this is a very common experience. What? People are simply rubbing hair goop in on their heads, and their necks are suddenly wrenched out of shape? Amazing!

Privacy, Right or Wrong?

I would like some feedback here. The subject is internet security....I am talking about the kind of security or insecurity that might allow the government to have access to our files.....email files, search files, and yes, even our blogging files.

The debate is heating up, and Google seems to have taken a stand...for now. But what happens now, and when.. and how...will it end?

Lets say, for instance, that you type in "Cuban cigars" or "tax shelter" or "getting out of a traffic ticket". Or, what about some of the unsavory comments that we read on here about the government and the President?. There is a government agency somewhere that is interested in these things...to be sure.

Yes, You Can Get Paid For Shopping

This is to update you on my experiment with mystery shopping. This has turned into almost a full-time job. It is a lot more involved than I expected.

First of all, there is a LOT of paperwork, a LOT of reading, and a LOT of writing. Most of the time, when you sign up for a company, they want a writing sample. They all demand perfect writing. They will accept no spelling errors or grammatical errors. The reports that you submit must make sense and each part must be in perfect agreement with all other sections of the report.

Minimum Wage: Not What It's Cracked Up To Be

Some of us might think that raising the minimum wage is going to leave us more money to spend at the end of the week or month. Some of us can think again. Economics 101: The number one rule is businesses do not take a hit sitting down....they pass on the costs.....to the consumer.

At $5.25 an hour, Joe was making $210.00 a week. At $6.50, he is making $260.00 a week. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that there is an extra $50.00. But, guess what? After Joe pays his bills, buys his groceries, puts gas in the car, and pays the orthodontist for little Joey's teeth....all at the new, inflated prices.....he doesn't even have enough left over to take his wife out to celebrate the new raise. In fact, if he isn't careful, he will be in the hole.

Now, That's Globalization !

This was in my email....and it tickled my funny bone so much, I had to share it.

Question: What is the truest definition of Globalization?

Answer: Princess Diana's death.

Question: How come?

Answer: An English princess with an Egyptian boyfriend crashes in a French tunnel, driving a German car with a Dutch engine, driven by a Belgian who was drunk on Scottish whisky (check the bottle before you change the spelling) followed closely by Italian Paparazzi, on Japanese motorcycles; treated by an American doctor, using Brazilian medicines.

Reduce The Interest Rate On Your Credit Cards

Did you know that many times you can negotiate a new interest rate with your credit card company? Credit card companies are making money on you. They don't want to lose you. So, it is very possible that they would be willing to reduce your rate if you ask.

If you have good credit, which can be checked easily enough using any number of credit reporting agencies, your issuer may be willing to slash your rate in order to keep you as a customer. Contact the company and tell them that if they cannot match a lower rate that you have found somewhere else, that you are probably going with another card.

Cancer Treatment...Only For the Rich

A lot of us are fuming about the new $100,000 a year cancer treatment that the Gennentech company has developed......for rich people. They are the only ones who will be able to afford the treatment, along with the other required cancer drugs and treatment.

The company, which is owned by Roche, claims that this drug is priced according to free enterprise rules, and in view of the cost of development and testing. Avastin is a drug, used for colon, breast and lung cancer, that is priced beyond the means of most people with cancer.

Big Bad Wal-Mart

Awwwwwww ! Bankers are afraid that Wal-mart is going to open bank branches? Banks don't want competition? Banks don't want to go up against Wal-mart, the giant that has a reputation for putting other businesses out of business.

Wal-mart has applied to open a bank to process credit card applications. They say that is all they want. They say they have no intention of starting up traditional banks. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, based in Arlington, Va, is holding it's first public hearing in it's 73-year history because of this issue.

The Raging Ritalin Debate

So they have finally announced that ritalin and other drugs of that nature are possibly dangerous. Thats almost a joke. Many of us have been warning people for years about the possible dangers of drugging a child in order to "calm him down" or "make him sit and listen."

Now, the FDA is going to require a warning label on these medicines, because they are alarmed that they may be "dangerous to the heart."
