English as the national language: What are we thinking?

Wow.

Yesterday the U.S. Senate actually passed legislation to make English the official language of the United States.
There is no logical motivation for this, save political.

Just when I thought the American government couldn’t be any less hospitable to people from south of the border who seek a better life here. Seeking a better life—hmm, sounds strangely familiar. Where have I heard that before? Ah yes, the founding of our country. Seeking a better life.

Here I am again, claiming my blog under a different name on Technorati. Trying to figure all this stuff out, so... don't mind me. By the by, I'm really enjoying blogging here... can't quite explain why it's so validating to finally have people reading my thoughts and commenting on them. Just gotta work out all the kinks.

Unless you're a white, English-speaking, balding, overweight, profit-minded, capitalist, smirking, Christian, self-righteous, neoconservative warmongering straight male, chances are that you're not.

Perhaps I'm being hypercritical. After all, as a young, vibrant, sexy anarcha-feminist gender-abolitionist quasi-Marxist lesbian intellectual, I can hardly hope to have my needs and wants reflected in a government based on the majority. Minorities like me--and most likely, like you--are S.O.L. in this system.
