From "Choose Peace and Happiness," by Susyn Reeve:

Eating dessert first is about having the good stuff first. Don't save it for a rainy day. Don't wait until tomorrow. Don't wait until you are the right weight, until your nails are the perfect length, until every issue in your life is worked out, until you have the right amount of money in the bank. Do it now. Many people spend their lives waiting, waiting to get married, waiting to finish school, waiting to have kids, waiting until their children are grown, waiting until they retire ... waiting, waiting, waiting. All we have is now. The past is over, and the future lives in our imagination. Now is the precious present, a gift that contains all the power that ever was and ever will be. It is up to us to savor and delight in the present moment, to approach our life as a glorious magnificent buffet and to reach for and enjoy the feast before us. So this week, eat dessert first and as you eat it, enjoy it; truly. This is the recipe for peace and happiness.

Can you accept the moments of anger and fear as guests, be willing to receive them with kindness without feeling obliged to serve them a five-course meal?
-Christina Feldman in 'Compassion: Listening to the Cries of the World'

From "Positive Energy," by Judith Orloff, M.D.:

Certain people give off positive energy, others negative. It's the quality of someone's being, a measure of love with which they've led their lives. It also reflects the inner work they've done, their efforts to heal anger, hatred, or self-loathing, which poison us like toxic fumes. Energetically these linger, precluding joy from shining through. It's important to grasp, however, that once you undertake the process of healing, it changes the quality of even the negativity that remains. Don't be too hard on yourself-we're all works in progress.

When we develop reverence for food and the miracle of transformation inherent in it, just the simple act of eating creates a ritual of celebration.
-Deepak Chopra

From "If the Buddha Came to Dinner: How to Nourish Your Body and Awaken Your Spirit" by Halé Sofia Schatz with Shira Shaiman:

We eat every day, all day long. But we are eating on the run, grabbing a doughnut and a cup of coffee on our way to work, heating up TV dinners, or making meals from instant foods. According to Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser's thorough investigation of our nation's fast-food preoccupation, about 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food goes toward purchasing processed food. In the incredible pace of our lives and with the availability of every prepackaged imaginable, we have lost the connection between what we eat, why we feed ourselves, and how we feel. For the most part, people eat without a great deal of thought beyond the taste. But the simple, daily act of eating has the potential to become a profound catalyst for spiritual growth, from experiencing a renewed sense of vitality and purpose in life to discovering our true vocations and making deeper connections in all of our relationships.

Worth Quoting: Mireille Guiliano on Taking Time for Yourself

"We have to take 'beach time' - a space for ourselves - every day, because we live in a world of burnout. Even if you take 20 to 30 minutes for yourself, you'll be a better worker, a better colleague, a better person. It benefits the people around you as much as it benefits you."

"One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well."

- Virginia Woolf

For 2.5 million years, our ancestors ate only what they could hunt and gather themselves. Every food item was raw, fresh, packed with vitamins and minerals, and had no refined sugar or salt. As we evolved, natural selection showed preference for humans eating this type of diet. Over the years, our health and survival as a species became genetically dependent on it.

Losing weight does not require you to put yourself through months of self-sacrifice. You simply have to (1) do a few things that will increase your body's metabolic rate and (2) replace high-calorie, low-nutrient foods with those that promote health.

I already gave you two ways to maximize your fat-loss efforts. Here are five more:

-Don't skip breakfast. This is the meal that is most commonly skipped, and many of the people who do it think they are doing themselves a favor by eliminating those calories. Nothing could be further from the truth. Numerous studies have shown that eating a protein-rich, low-glycemic breakfast is essential for healthy weight loss.

This past weekend, I met a man at a dinner party who shared with me the difficulty he is having losing weight. He said that he has not always been overweight, but he gained about 40 pounds in the last several years when his career and lifestyle became more sedentary. He said he was frustrated, because he was "doing everything right" but the fat just wouldn't come off.

Here's what he meant by "doing everything right": He was eating a lot less, he was eating less frequently, and he was eating a "low-fat" diet. In other words, he was sabotaging his efforts to lose weight by slowing down his metabolism.

If your goal is to eat healthfully and lose weight, but you can't seem to make the good habits stick, here are a few ideas to keep you on the right track.

1. Brush your teeth several times per day. When your mouth feels clean and fresh, you are much less likely to eat between meals.

2. Eat five or six small meals instead of two or three big ones. Doing this helps balance your blood sugar. It also reduces the temptation to snack on junk food or grossly overeat when you do sit down to a meal.

"One can resist the invasion of an army but one cannot resist the invasion of ideas."
-- Victor Hugo

Are you ready to be surprised? Life is full of surprises - to those who are aware.

History records amazing coincidences in the lives of two of America's founders - Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. You are aware that Jefferson labored for two weeks writing the Declaration of Independence. He showed his drafts to Adams and Benjamin Franklin, who edited it, honed Jefferson's ideas and refined the document. When it was finally finished, he brought it before the Continental Congress for approval.

Would you like to spend as much time as possible feeling good? Happy? Contented?

The ancient shamans have a secret practice that can help you maximize your pleasure in life—and minimize your pain. Interested?

The shamans advise: “Welcome discomfort!”

They’ve got to be kidding!

No, they’re not kidding. The ancient ones are quite serious. Or shall I use another word other than serious? Because the effectiveness of “Welcoming discomfort!” depends on NOT taking the discomfort seriously!
