Blocks Away From An Explosion

explosions | Fear | NYC | terrorism

As I write this, there's the aftermath of an explosion here in NYC around 41st and Broadway, which is a few blocks from the hotel I'm presently staying at. It seems to only be a big steam explosion, though there are some injuries, but it's not the act of a terrorist, thank goodness.

Here's two thoughts, though. One, the very first thing that people worried about was that it was a terrorist attack. The truth, America, is that New York City is in more danger than any city in the country, and, as I heard today, it's only getting 18% of the funds that are allocated against terrorism across the country. Come on, who really believes Al Qaeda knows anything about Iowa anyway? When things like this happen in a city like New York, it's hard to get good information, so people probably start making stuff up out of fear rather than out of trying to fool anyone. After all, there was talk that a building had collapsed, and that turns out to be untrue.

Two, people are just plain nuts. I'm watching it on TV before thinking about going out to eat, and of course I was planning on eating out at 42nd Street, which might not be one of my better ideas tonight, but on TV you see all these pepole just standing around, watching the whole thing unfold, and staying, not leaving or anything, just watching it all. I have to tell you that I'm one of those people who'd be gone in a heartbeat if I were close, heading for a safe place and THEN looking for information. Kind of like the movie Independence Day, when all those people saw the spaceships and, instead of deciding to beat feet, stood around staring, waiting for something to happen; that turned out to be a stupid move, didn't it?

It's never dull in NYC!

I just got done reading about this

Yes, I think cities like NYC, and LA, any large city with a large people population is a bigger target than any other, however, wouldn't that be like a terrorist to attack a small midwest city, under the assumption that we will be waiting for it to happen in the bigger cities. I dont put anything past them. I could imagine all fear when this happened. Glad it was only a steam pipe. Are ya having fun in the big apple?

I am having fun, Ammorton,...

and I know what you're saying about possible attacks elsewhere, but let's look at this realistically. Sure, maybe Kansas City has something to worry about because it's a fairly large city, but in most places in the Midwest, the terrorists are going to stand out like a sore thumb, unless they're physicians, and even there they usually stand out in a crowd. In NYC, no one stands out because you see a little bit of everything, and everyone moves really fast. The only people watching everyone are the people who aren't going to say anything to anyone, those being most of the street people.

A sidebar comment, that being that, these days, you see people talking to themselves and it's no longer strange because you might not be able to see that Bluetooth thing on the side of their heads, but you pretty much figure it's there. :-)

Thanks ModelMom,...

You're getting a new IKEA,... neat! Actually, I have no idea what that is. :-) But I guess it competes well with a non-terrorist explosion.

Well guess what Catfish? This really

Sassys

blows my mind...I mean the "terrorist's" blablabla...Wanna know who the REAL terrorist's are? Saudi Arabia! Yep! And they are Big, Big, BIG buddies of Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. Coincidense? NOPE! The Bin Ladens and the Bush's go way back...they have funded Bush and his party for years.
Now there are some questions that the Republicans do not want to answer...like why the hell are they taking money from Osamas family? UGH! UGH! UGH!!!

Catfish's picture

You rabble-rouser, Sassys,...

but, unfortunately, you're also correct. Overall, United States policy has always been to arm the guy whose side we're on at the time, yet try to make it seem like we have no hand in it; yeah, right? We supported Saddam, Osama, Noreiga (both of them), and others at one time or another, only to have a change of heart later on and end up dealing with other issues. That's a policy that has to stop; either take responsibility for siding with one or the other or just stay out of it.

Course, in my mind, I hear the conversation between Bush Sr and bin Laden Sr going something like this:

"What's with our kids?"

"I don't know; they seem to have forgotten that it's all about the money, not the doctrine."

"Yeah, we must have missed something in the generations on this one, eh?"

"I'm telling you, kids these days."

"Yup; can I have one of those Ensures, the chocolate one?"

LMAO Catfish!!

Sassys

I kind of envision the convo a little differently...

Bush: Mr Laden welcome to our little country.

Laden: So glad you would have us...not many civilized countries do these days!

Bush: Got oil?

Laden: Sure do buddy...got tall buildings? I am looking for something for Osama to do...he gets a little bored ya know?

Bush: Well I say we send him to good ole NYC...if he can't make a name for himself there then he is beyond my help!

Laden: Now that sounds like a great plan...how about we get the boys together for a picnic...Chernoble is an ideal little spot.

UGH! UGH! UGH!

Funny also, Sassys,...

though I think the steaks would overcook a little bit in Chernobyl, so they might like a cooler place in Kuwait, where they could have a private picnic in some expensive, fancy place. After all, it all comes down to the money.
