BEWARE OF MYSPACE TRACKER SCAMS!!

There has been such a rush lately for MySpace tracker information that it was really only a matter of time before spam and scams started showing up.

A couple days ago I received a bulletin from someone on my friend's list. The bulletin said something like this...

"Want a MySpace tracker? Re-post this bulletin and type in MySpace Tracker, MySpace Tracker and information will be sent to you."

Ok, now that one was harmless enough. Of course, no one is going to send you any information just because you posted a bulletin... all you're really doing is creating bulletin spam and looking stupid. ;-)

But then there was another bulletin that actually included a link to a website that claimed to have a working MySpace tracker. So I checked it out... I was directed to a website that consisted of a single page. No contact info, no email adress... just a simple, no-frills page with a form on it. The form asked for your email (the one you use to log onto MySpace) and your MySpace password.

I wanted to see what would happen so I used the info from an old MySpace account that I had created awhile ago. I filled in the information... even my password and clicked Submit. This message appeared "Site down for maintenace. Check back shortly."

Now do you really think the site was down for maintenace? Probably not... Most likely, whoever created the website was just trying to acquire as many email addresses and MySpace passwords as possible. Or maybe even a specific MySpace password for someone on his friend's list. For what? Who knows...(And no I'm not going to post the link here.)

The point is, you really need to be careful. Don't believe every claim about MySpace trackers that you hear, no matter how "desperate" you are to know who is viewing your Myspace profile.

But you should never enter your personal email, MySpace or password information into something that you're not sure about.

If you absolutely have to sign-up for it... create a dummy MySpace account and use that info instead. A little caution and common sense goes a long way.

As far as actual MySpace tracker news... I've come across a a few MySpace tracker sites that I hadn't seen before, but haven't had much time to actually go in and see how they work, although it's doubtful that they do actually work. I'll be posting more MySpace tracker news soon though... so stay tuned.

I ran into one of these stupid tracker pages on myspace... and of course I entered my info because I was curious. Afterward I started having major trouble with myspace and yahoo messenger (( especially my messenger...)) So now I'm stuck here wondering if that dumb page had anything to do with it... OR is it just yahoo screwing up. If anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it... I'm kind of a messenger junkie (( Can't live without it ))

HELP PLEASE!

I haven't been able to get on YM all day because they just released an upgrade. I tried to install it just now, but it hung. If your problems just started, it's almost certainly because they upgraded it and shut us out.

Hi Cristina...

I don't think the two are related. I didn't experience any problems (that I can recall, anyway) when I originally entered my info onto that myspace tracker page months ago. I just signed into my Yahoo Msgr acct and was able to log in just fine - although it did take a little longer than usual.

I'm bummed because MYSPACE is DOWN! :( I just went on digg.com and saw something about rolling blackouts causing problems with MySpace and Yahoo... but I haven't heard anything else.

I never really thought I was a MySpace addict, but now that I can't sign in... I'm itching to get back on there... *sigh*. Guess I'll go and try again... ;-)

But welcome to BP... you too manodogs! :)

I used to get those rolling blackouts... that's why I drink at home now. Thanks for the welcome, btw! I noticed MySpace down earlier and it was down the other night, too (same msg and everything), but I installed the new YM upgrade and got right back on just fine. With all the storms and goings-on though, it probably is a backbone or network issue. Good luck getting back on!

MySpace is back up and running!!! :D

I guess it came back up sometime early this morning...

Now that that's taken care of, I can go back to trying to figure out how to make it rain again in Seattle!! :(

Scams are almost as old as the internet and such a popular place like MySpace is a sure target. And like the writer said: "a little common sense goes a long way" - totally agree. In fact these kind of messages are all over the internet. It's like there are some spam junkies that keep bugging everybody. Then they belong in a drug treatment center.

Everybody is trying to get some money and in their minds why not do it the easy and fast way right ? Maybe they need money to buy drugs, but why not go to narconon and cure instead ?
