Benny Mardones "Into The Night"

Jersey-born singer/songwriter Benny Mardones holds the rare distinction of being a one-hit wonder who twice had a US Top 40 hit with the same song. Mardones managed to place his song "Into The Night" into the Top 40 nearly a decade apart. Although it would be his only hit song, there are few listeners to radio during the '80s to whom the song is unfamiliar.

Mardones had released one album, when, in 1980, he issued Never Run, Never Hide. From it, "Into The Night" was chosen as a single and listeners immediately responded. The mid-tempo song featured not only a melodramatic melody which built to a crescendo, Mardones' vocals proved an equal match as far as drama. Although a love song, "Into The Night" also had a somewhat obsessive feel to it, but that aspect seemed to have little impact in detracting from its success.

Entering the Top 40 in July, "Into The Night" would spend three months in the Top 40. It would steadily climb the chart throughout the summer and into early fall when it finally peaked at #11 in October. Mardones proved unable to follow-up the song, but "Into The Night" remained a constant on adult contemporary radio for years to come.

Nine years later, "Into The Night" received new life. It would become a favorite with a new generation of fans and re-enter the charts, eventually climbing to #20. In a somewhat ironic twist, Mardones' co-writer on "Into The Night" was singer Robert Tepper who would become a one-hit wonder as well when his song "No Easy Way Out" from the film Rocky IV became his lone Top 40 hit in 1986.
