Being Healthy Just Costs Too Much! Pass Me a Big Mac!

I want so badly to get on some knd of health bandwagon and start eating fresh foods, whole foods, all the good stuff.....but I seriously cringe at how much all this "good" stuff costs! I feed my son mostly organic foods, but for some reason just can't seem to justify spending all that much more on myself. And forget about my husband.....he's a man, he loves junkfood and eats it hand over fist. But I feel like we owe it to our kids to get healthy......and I know that a healthy body will, in the long run, save us tons in med bills, etc.......but STILL!
My own junkfood addiction aside, I do also love eating health food. It's nothing like it was when I was growing up, and I know this for a fact since my parents have always been of the rabbit food and wheat germ variety.....yeah, try inviting a friend over for dinner only to have your mom serve lentil loaf with a side of seaweed. Why couldn't I have had the traditional Cuban mom?! :-P Health food now actually tastes really good with the exception of things like soy milk which I just can't acquire a taste for...and I would eat it all with gusto and a loud round of applause from my body, but the price tags on this stuff......not to mention the shelf life being so much shorter, I end up buying an organic loaf of bread only to have to toss half of it out 4 days later. *Sigh*.
I don't really know why I'm writing this. I need to go to the store again today and man.....I dunno....it just costs too much to live....especially live "well". This is one of the many things I miss about living in Europe. Food was always so much fresher and free of all the synthetic crap we put in our own grub and it didnt cost much. Good food is what they had and that was that. Simple. I miss simple. And I should have never read "Fast Food Nation".....ignorance is bliss, right?

I know what you mean about the cost
of eating healthy. Almost three years ago(in October) my husband underwent a triple bypass heart surgery at the age of 44. Of course we were all about the " eating healthy", lots of fruits, veges, and whole grain this and that. We still are, when we can afford it. This stuff is outrageously priced. These people know that this country is full of unhealthy people and that they can make a buck when we all get told by a doctor that we need to change our eating habits from this to that, or we will die. It kinda pisses me off. I know that we all should really practice eating healthy, and excercise. I am one who could use to do both of these more. When you cant afford to eat healthy, what do they expect you to do? Have you priced a package of hamburger meat that is 97% lean? For a 3.79 pound family pack, I paid damn near 11.00. It is just ridiculas.
you're almost forced to be unhealthy
and it is really awful & unfair too.....it's as if you are only allowed to be healthy if you are affluent. even the restaurants in wealthier parts of town are healthier. you go to the other side of the tracks and there's nothing but fast food everywhere. and i believe you with the ground beef....i bought free range, hormone free chicken the other day and didnt look at the price until they rang it up....you figure chicken cant cost that much, right? wrong.

I have heard of the free range chickens
they are sapose to be really better then the rest. I dont think I have priced one though. Chicken was always the cheapest thing, unless you want the healthiest part of it, the white breast meat. It costs alot more than just say, drumsticks, or thighs.
ammorton, you reminded me of a joke
A bartender friend of mine was dating this woman who really knocked his socks off! One day he thought he was being really clever and asked her - "If a vegan mother breastfeeds her baby - is that wrong??" Without blinking an eye she replied - "Not if she's a freerange mother"
Anyway, this subject always gets me because I never learned how to cook! Healthy eating??? Organic food??? I don't know what half the crap IS! COOK IT??? Please!!!! I'm sure if I did I could lose some of this excess, er, baggage! HELP!

Healthy eating is alot better
for all of us, however, I am a chocoholic, real bad. I am also a sweets hound. All of this is bad, and I know this. I try to not eat this stuff, but it is hard. We have just started seeing more and more organic food here in my grocery store. It is just alot more expensive. Cooking it is easy, but I really dont cook alot of it. We eat alot of the same food, just change the way we cook it or prepare it so to speak. I am like modelmom though, I dont care for the soy stuff, yuk.
chocolate cheese and bread
i could live off of those!!!!! great diet, eh?

Great! Now I'm hungry!
I only seem to want chocolate that one week a month, but could eat coco puffs all day long! I'm more the brownie or cake type.....it needs yeast and flour! Crap, now I'm hungry!

oh my do you know what the good stuff is
I love chocolate, especially cheese, and all breads-yep I am with ya on this. I could eat so cheap if that is all I ate, and believe me, I could just live on this alone too.
you know what's sad, ammorton???
One of the big reasons that I want to visit France??? So, I can eat my weight in French cheese and I also think it's funny that even cheap table wine is FRENCH WINE! So, there you have it. Not for long walks on the French riviera, or romatic nights out in the most romantic place on earth! Nope. I wanna eat stinky cheese and wash it down with cheap wine!

We're lucky enough to have a
We're lucky enough to have a really good farmer's market here. Tomatoes are cheap and organic, there are homemade cheeses and breads, and there is even local buffalo and catfish. The prices are pretty good, and the food is so much fresher. Seriously, in the city where my home is, the corn is phenomenal. It literally melts in your mouth and tastes like butter. I'd love to go totally vegan AND do a 100 mile diet, but for now I'm just trying to replace a few things here and there with healthier alternatives.

100 mile diet????
Er, what's that? Some kind of granola-head lingo I've never heard of?

that corn....

Heh. Yep. Total granola
Heh. Yep. Total granola head phrase. Buy stuff made locally and you're eating fresher food. It hasn't wasted a lot of gas to get to your table, and the food is fresher because it hasn't spent all that time in transit.

Ohhhhh, that's better
than what I thought! I figured I'd have to walk 100 miles before I could eat or something. That sounds better.

Hey you are from Europe? So am I!
Sassys
The food not only tastes better over there, but it is cheaper! Then again they tend to eat French Fries with Mayo...Ack! That's not my idea of a diet...but then again when in France do as the French...no? Or N'est pas? LOL.
kinda from europe
LOL! my dad is hungarian (my mom's cuban) but i was born in california.....dual citizen by way of easy laws (somewhat easy) in hungary regarding children of hungarians. i can aplly for dual citizenship for my kids as well whch i will do when we move back to LA. there arent any consuls or embassies here in oregon.
i have lived in austria and italy extensively though and ADORE it. i feel far more european than american in so many ways. i'm sure being raised by non american parents helped in that respect. i dont want to sound like an america basher, i just rather be in europe....and you are right about the food. so good, so fresh, so cheap. and i never did get into the mayo & pommes frites thing. LOL! or the beer at mcdonalds either! :-P
