Beginning with the Vijnanabhairava Tantra

The first paragraph of the Vijnanabhairava Tantra a text belonging to the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism, and considered by many to represent the quintessence of all yoga instruction, begins:

Bhairava and Bhairavi, lovingly united in the same knowledge, left the undifferentiated state so their dialogue may enlighten all beings.

In this passage, "Bhairava and Bhairavi" represent the masculine & feminine aspects of all-that-is, which ~ when united in the "indifferentiated state" ~ inhabit a place beyond language ... the place of pure (non-conceptual) knowlege. Because they have already perfected themselves, they have no need, for themselves, to speak ... but choose to leave this blissful & beyond-all-language state in order to have a conversation, a dialogue which "may enlighten all beings."

This Tantra, then, is in the form of a conversation: Bhairavi asks Bhairava questions, the answers to which (because she's already enlightened) she already knows! And why does she ask these questions? So that Bhairava will speak the answers, and then the beings listening to this conversation will benefit from it ...
