Bat Houses – Yea, You Read That Right

Before I get into this, it is important that you understand how much of my day I waste thinking about random useless topics. I can spend hours wondering what the evolutionary process was like that resulted in a lemur peeing on its hands and then rubbing them on tree branches to mark its area. In other words, forgive my random ramblings from time to time.

After my last entry, I noticed that there was an ad for bat houses on my blog. Apparently, there is not only a market for bat houses, but someone actually sells them on line. Is there anyone out there that actually owns a bat house? I ask because, well, birdhouses make sense to me. Birds are pretty, they sing beautiful songs, and the only real drawback is that they will, from time to time, drop a bowel movement on your car. But bat houses? Really? I am racking my brain searching for a reason why you would want to attract bats to your home. I grew up in a rural area near a small stream. During the summer time, around dusk, we could always see bats flying around in the yard chasing moths and mosquitoes. They looked a little like drunken birds the way they flipped and dipped. Anyway, I do not once remember thinking “hmmm I wonder how we could keep more of these around?

Now before the conservationists out there hit me with all the good things bats do, let me say this: I know that they eat mosquitoes and other insects. So why can’t I just get a bird house, a good citronella candle and be done with it? Bats come out at night, so you don’t really get to see them that much. They also do little more than squeak, which few would refer to as a song. In other words, you still get the possibility of dung on your car, but without the pretty birds and sweet songs. So I ask again, do people really buy bat houses?

So what else can I get houses for? Well funny I should ask me that. I did a google search and it turns out that, in addition to bird and bat houses, you can get butterfly houses, and bee houses. Bee houses (as opposed to hives)? That will end up being its own blog entry some day I have a feeling.

Hey, if there is such thing as a bat house, why did Batman have a cave? Sure he would have been more comfortable in a house.

Well, no matter what the reason for them, bat houses do exist. If you do happen to want a bat house, please let me know and let me know why. I really do wonder about things like this…it’s just how synapses fire I suppose. “Why are there such things as bat houses? now gets added to my list of questions. It will be just below or just above the question: Do Snorks have weighted feet to keep them on the bottom of the ocean?

Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn’t send out a big thank you to o ceallaigh for actually sending me answers to all the bat genitalia questions. The web is a sea of information, isn’t it?

Re: Bat houses

We actually have had bats in our home before. They're all over our small little town, and I was really interested in your take on it; however, I don't think I'd want to buy a "bat house" to merely ASK them to please stay near my home. As it is, it's hard sometimes to get them back outside. I didn't even know it was illegal to kill them until recently, so I just open the door and pray they'll go out. Thanks for the info.
