Baby Got a Gun!

Illinois, one of the states in the Union whose gun laws are tauted as being among the strictest, granted a 10-month old baby a gun license...

It lists his height and weight (2'3, 20#) and bears a little baby squiggle for a "signature." The official overseeing the process noted that a 10-month baby didn't need a gun license (and they call these laws "strict"? Ha!), but that the law does not have an age limit. The licenses are meant to ensure convicted felons and others do not possess guns, not children.

It took Howard David "Bubba" Ludwig three tries to get the license because he didn't fill the forms out exactly correct the first two times, but come on - give the little guy a break! That's not bad for a first try!

The little tyke's grandfather bought him a shotgun - always an appropriate gift for a baby - and he wanted to make sure he was all legal before he started school.

His father said he didn't expect to get it, but "It will make a heck of a cute addition to his baby book!"

Here's the kicker (and why I chose this particular article to link to, as this story has been reported all over the Web, including by the BBC): read the second comment following the article. Yeah, I'm not 100% positive the poster realizes Bubba had a little help filling out his form, are you?

I had to run into town very early this morning, and had to slow down through the school zone coming into the far end of town. I saw no buses. On my way out of town, I had to slow down again through the school zone, yet I still saw no buses! since it's on the highway, you have to slow down from 55 MPH to 15 for about a mile.

I was a little upset that I had spent 30-45 minutes in town and the damn school zone was still flashing - and there were still no buses! But there was nothing I could do, so like I normally do, I turned to mocking it, and had to laugh right out loud when I mused that maybe they just left them flashing all day long in case someone started shooting.

and it's amazing how the people who gave him the license basically want to defend it.

Haha! Do you mean the grandfather who gave him the gun to begin with, or the cats who granted him the license?

The ones who gave him the license,...

Three Chances

You think? Or do you think they were making a statement? Although I'm really not sure what that statement is, and believe you me, I've been thinking about it! I thought maybe it was like a "loyalty to teh system" thing, but I just don't know. Maybe they did it just to bring attention to it, but for what purpose?

The Lt. overseeing the thing sent it back to the guy twice and said, "I don't see why a 10-month old would need a FOID, but we followed the law on this one." The law does not state one needs to be of a specific age to hold a license.

Maybe he really did do it just to bring it to everyone's attention, knowing something this bizarre would make it into the papers?

I don't know. Heh. It's so silly, I find it hard to believe it's problematic, but then, with all the school shootings, maybe the guy was trying to call attention to the "loophole" in the system?

Well, I, for one, will sleep better tonight knowing that this

10-month-old is legally licensed - especially considering the fact, so appropriately provided by the Libertarian dude, that licensed gun holders rarely commit murders. I tell you, I'm just getting sick of reading about 10, 11, 12-month-old kids going on these shooting sprees.

And yet another item to add to the list of "Things to give your recently born grandchild."

Yeah! I'm glad someone else followed that link. I love that quote! I, too, will sleep better knowing that 10-month old is statistically less likely to commit a crime now that he is licensed.

That awful bank attempt in LA several years back should have been the real wake-up call. You know, when those babies got on their Armored Onesies and had to be brought down by pretty much the entire force?

When that kid asked for his mommy... I knew, I just knew.

We Brits call them baby-grows which conjures up an

this is alarming, if there is nothing in law to prevent a baby

legally holding a gun licence then there is nothing to stop any minor holding one. If that is the case what other omissions in the law are there?

In Britain no one under 18 may hold a gun licence. You have to prove why you need a gun licence and the police can object to your having one.

Certain guns are illegal. In fact the British Olympic shooting team have to do some of their training abroad because some of the disciplines require guns that are illegal in Britain.

And, until recently, Britons have enjoyed a fairly gun-free crime environment. Minors can have gun licenses and, like I said earlier, maybe that was the point the Lieutenant was trying to make in granting this license - knowing full-well it would make the news. I'm not sure.

Still, I couldn't agree more. The whole idea that anyone can possess a gun permit without having to first undergo some kind of mental health evaluation and gun safety course is the problem. And, obviously, we Americans are just too damned stupid to figure that out, so... at least I'm ensured of having more to blog about on this issue in the future.

No reformation for gun control results in my job security.
